O's making coaching staff changes (source)
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles¡¯ coaching staff under manager Brandon Hyde will look quite different in 2025.
A source told MLB.com on Friday that co-hitting coach Ryan Fuller, bench coach Fredi Gonz¨¢lez and Major League coach Jos¨¦ Hern¨¢ndez will not be returning next season. The club has not yet confirmed the departures.
On Monday, a source said that co-hitting coach Matt Borgschulte will also not be back in 2025, which the club has not yet confirmed. Borgschulte will be returning to the Twins to serve as a big league hitting coach.
In 2024, Baltimore had a trio of hitting coaches: Fuller and Borgschulte, as well as offensive strategy coach Cody Asche. It is not yet known how the O¡¯s staff will be filled out in ¡®25, but Fuller and Borgschulte will both be gone.
Fuller, 34, joined the Orioles¡¯ organization in the 2020 season, when he was hired to be the hitting coach at Single-A Delmarva and worked at the alternate training site. In ¡®21, he became the Double-A Bowie hitting coach and also worked as the full-season Minor League hitting coordinator. He spent three seasons as Baltimore¡¯s co-hitting coach from 2022-24.
Borgschulte, 33, was also an O's co-hitting coach for three seasons from 2022-24. He previously served as the hitting coach for Triple-A St. Paul in '21, which marked the end of a four-year tenure in Minnesota's organization.
The Orioles¡¯ lineup produced inconsistent results this past season, often struggling to hit with runners in scoring position. Their offensive woes were displayed during the postseason, when they scored one run over two games while getting swept by the Royals in the American League Wild Card Series.
Gonz¨¢lez, 60, spent three years as the O¡¯s bench coach from 2022-24, after being a Major League coach the previous two seasons in ¡®20 and ¡®21. He came to Baltimore after a three-year stint as Miami¡¯s third-base coach from 2017-19.
A former manager for the Marlins (2007-10) and Braves (2011-16), Gonz¨¢lez has 25 years of big league experience and worked closely with Hyde during his time with the Orioles.
Hern¨¢ndez, 55, had been on Baltimore¡¯s coaching staff since 2019, having served as Major League coach (¡®19, ¡®22-24) and assistant hitting coach (¡®20 and ¡®21). He spent 15 seasons in the Orioles¡¯ organization, previously coaching in the Minors from 2010-18.
