Drafting teams from the '25 Top 10 Prospects by Position lists
MLB Pipeline's Top 100 Prospects list and Top 10 prospects by Position lists have generated a lot of buzz, and with a month to go until the release of our Top 30 lists by organization (coming March 3-5), this feels like a good time to have a little fun.
Inspired by a reader question via the Pipeline Inbox (don't forget to submit yours each week), for the second consecutive year, Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo mock drafted a 10-player team of prospects based solely on the Top 10 at their position.

The format followed last year's guidelines: each team could only be comprised of one player per position and one player per ranking spot. This meant three outfielders for each side from the same list, but still, the ranking spot rule applied.
The segment on this week's Pipeline Podcast began with co-host Jason Ratliff giving Mayo a slight edge for last year's incarnation, with Callis quickly rebuffing that claim. Let's take a closer look at how things unfolded this time around.
ROUND 1
Callis: Sebastian Walcott, TEX (No. 4 on Top 10 SS)
He is the 17th player on the Top 100 list. But the No. 4 shortstop. I just liked him. I thought he was a standout when I was looking at guys in that No. 4 slot. So I like the talent, I think he¡¯s going to keep rising and I just thought that he was a good fit.
ROUND 2
Mayo: Kyle Teel, CWS (No. 3 on Top 10 C)
There¡¯s a theme for me in the first few rounds here, where I went to the lists that I felt weren¡¯t quite as strong and took guys that I wanted. Now, catching Top 10 is deeper the last couple of years but I wanted to make sure that I can get one of the guys that¡¯s closer to the top of the list. So I took Kyle Teel from the White Sox. He¡¯s No. 3 on the catcher¡¯s list, No. 32 overall on the Top 100. He¡¯s close to the big leagues, so I look forward to seeing what he can do once he gets to Chicago or in Triple-A, wherever he starts the year.
Callis: Josue De Paula, LAD (No. 9 on Top 10 OF)
The tricky thing is you have to draft three outfielders when we only have 10 outfielders on the list. So the outfield depth is good, so the players at the bottom of the outfield list are better than players at the other part of the outfield list. And I didn¡¯t want to get trapped if Jonathan started drafting lower-ranked outfielders where I had to then use higher picks on outfielders, if that makes sense. So my next two picks, I took the No. 9 outfielder Josue De Paula of the Dodgers. Who, I think, is going to break out. He¡¯s like Yordan Alvarez, perhaps 2.0.

ROUND 3
Callis: Chase DeLauter, CLE (No. 7 on Top 10 OF)
And then you know I have my big prospect crush on Chase DeLauter. He just needs to stay healthy. And he was only ranked No. 7 on the outfield list, so I knocked off No. 7 and No. 9, and I ensured I¡¯m not going to have to use higher picks on outfielders that I may want to use at scarcer positions. So that was kind of my strategy there.
Mayo: Travis Bazzana, CLE (No. 2 on Top 10 2B)
I went back to position scarcity and I was thrilled to get Travis Bazzana as my second baseman. He¡¯s No. 10 on the Top 100 and No. 2 on the second baseman list.
ROUND 4
Mayo: Jackson Ferris, LAD (No. 5 on Top 10 LHP)
Staying in that same vein, I went to the left-handed pitchers list, which is not terribly deep this year, and took Jackson Ferris. He¡¯s No. 5 there and No. 71 on the Top 100. So, for me, looking at the draft totality ... what I did in Rounds 3 and 4 in getting Bazzana and Ferris, I¡¯m really pleased with.
Callis: Alejandro Rosario, TEX (No. 10 on Top 10 RHP)
At this point, I think we¡¯re pretty much locked in where we weren¡¯t going to be taking each other¡¯s players now. Looking back, I could have probably gone outfielder with my No. 10 pick. But I really liked Alejandro Rosario. I thought the two best 10th-ranked guys were Alejandro Rosario among the right-handers and Lazaro Montes among the outfielders, and you can probably throw Jacob Wilson on there too. But No. 10 you want to take from a deep position, so I went with Alejandro Rosario because if you took my right-handed pitcher, then you were going to force me to use two picks on pitchers ... possibly screwing up my draft. So Rosario at 10.
ROUND 5
Callis: Blake Mitchell, KC (No. 6 on Top 10 C)
And then I¡¯m going with Blake Mitchell at No. 6 on the Top 10 catcher list. I¡¯m a big Blake Mitchell fan. He¡¯s ranked highly but I think he flies under the radar among some of the catchers who are more famous than him. And then I do think, at this point, I know all my picks from here, you couldn¡¯t take all of the guys that I wanted. And I assume, I wasn¡¯t going to poach you at this point either.
Mayo: Max Clark, DET (No. 4 on Top 10 OF)
I had my choice for that No. 4 ranking after Jim took Walcott at the top, and I was torn here between Max Clark and Bubba Chandler, the right-hander for the Pirates. So I wasn¡¯t competing against Jim here, I was competing against myself. And I don¡¯t think there was a bad choice between those two, so I opted to go with Max Clark, who is No. 6 overall on the Top 100. I love the upside, happy to have him running balls down in my center field.
ROUND 6
Mayo: Emmanuel Rodriguez, MIN (No. 8 on Top 10 OF)
Now we¡¯re locked in and I said the outfield is the one place where we maybe could have run into each other. But I had an idea of what I wanted to do with my remaining slots, so I went with Emmanuel Rodriguez, who is No. 8 on the outfield list and No. 37 overall on the Top 100. He kind of fits in that Chase DeLauter bucket in terms of he just needs to stay healthy. Scouts love him when we get feedback on the Top 100, they were pushing us to have him moved up because when he¡¯s on the field the tools are really, really good. It¡¯s just that he¡¯s gotten hurt a lot. Not the recurring injury, like Chase DeLauter, but he¡¯s missed time each year and still managed to get to the upper levels at the same time. So I¡¯m hoping he could have a full healthy year and show what he can really do.
ROUND 7
Callis: Nick Kurtz, A¡¯s (No. 3 on Top 10 1B)
I identified Nick Kurtz at first base at No. 3 on that list. I thought that was the best value in terms of talent and slot. So he was a guy that I was hoping to get when we lined this all up.
Mayo: Josue Brice?o, DET (No. 6 on Top 10 1B)
When I decided to take Kyle Teel in my No. 3 slot at catcher, I was trying to figure out, and it was a little too early know exactly how it was going to go, but I like Kurtz. But I¡¯m pretty pleased to get Teel at the No. 3 slot and now I¡¯m taking my first baseman, Josue Brice?o. Maybe there¡¯s a little recency bias because of what we saw him do in the Arizona Fall League. But I¡¯m OK with that. He¡¯s on our Top 100 at 95 overall and No. 6 first baseman. I think, particularly if catching is removed from his resume and he can just play first base and rake, he¡¯s going to hit for a lot of power and he¡¯s going to get to the big leagues quick.
ROUND 8
Mayo: Lazaro Montes, SEA (No. 10 on Top 10 OF)
You mentioned Lazaro Montes and I agree with you on the No. 10 value there, so that¡¯s who I took with my remaining outfield spot. He¡¯s No. 42 overall on the Top 100, I am completely sold on his power potential at a corner outfield spot.
Callis: Jasson Dom¨ªnguez, NYY (No. 5 on Top 10 OF)
At this point, just filling positions, so I went with the fifth-ranked outfielder.
ROUND 9
Callis: Carson Whisenhunt, SFG (No. 8 on Top 10 LHP)
This was kind of switching from my original plan which was to do what you did, Jonathan, get Ferris and Rodriguez at those positions. After you took Ferris, I toyed with some ideas, like can I get Cam Caminiti in there and then not get Blake Mitchell and get a lesser catcher. So I just stuck with a plan, and I believe Carson Whisenhunt is the only non-Top 100 prospect that either of us is going to wind up taking.
Mayo: JJ Wetherholt, STL (No. 7 on Top 10 SS)
I really love the value there at No. 23 on the Top 100. He was a first-rounder for the Cardinals last year.
ROUND 10
Mayo: Brandon Sproat, NYM (No. 9 on Top 10 RHP)
He¡¯s No. 46 on the Top 100 list and I went with Sproat as my right-hander. But I was torn because my other option was to flip those rankings and take Kevin McGonigle as my shortstop and Rhett Lowder as my right-hander. I think you could probably argue either way. But I¡¯m pleased with what I ended up with.
Callis: Kristian Campbell, BOS (No. 1 on Top 10 2B)
I knew I was taking Kristian Campbell or Travis Bazzana coming into the draft, and pretty much as soon as you made your first pick with Coby Mayo, that meant you couldn¡¯t take Campbell and I figured you¡¯d probably take Bazzana. So I just floated Campbell down to the last pick, and I did the same thing last year with Jackson Chourio with my last pick. But I¡¯m pleased to get him. I¡¯m glad we satisfied our rule. I think we talked about Kristian Campbell on every podcast: breakout season, swing changes, he¡¯s gotten stronger. Some organizations think he¡¯s the best prospect in baseball.
