PHOENIX -- After a flurry of moves Tuesday, the D-backs announced their 26-man roster ahead of their opener against the Cubs on Thursday night.
The D-backs announced that both left-hander Jordan Montgomery and right-hander Kevin Ginkel will open the year on the IL. Montgomery will need Tommy John surgery, while Ginkel was diagnosed with right shoulder inflammation.
Then, in part because of those injuries, the Diamondbacks agreed to terms with left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks on a Major League deal.
With those moves, here is how the Opening Day roster lines up:
Catcher (2): Gabriel Moreno, Jose Herrera
This was the expected scenario all along with rookie Adrian Del Castillo headed to Triple-A Reno to continue to develop.
First baseman (1): Josh Naylor
Naylor is replacing longtime first base stalwart Christian Walker, who signed a free-agent deal with the Astros. Naylor had a big spring at the plate.
Second baseman (1): Ketel Marte
Marte was once again outstanding in 2024. The Diamondbacks would also like to give him some DH at-bats over the course of the year to lessen the wear and tear on his body.
Shortstop (1): Geraldo Perdomo
The only change here is that Perdomo signed a four-year, $45 million contract extension since the first projections.
Third baseman (1): Eugenio Suárez
Su¨¢rez mashed the ball this spring, picking up right where he left off in the second half of 2024 (.943 OPS after the All-Star break).
Outfielders (4): Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Jake McCarthy, Alek Thomas
The only question here was how the playing time in center with McCarthy and Thomas would sort itself out. We¡¯ll have to see how manager Torey Lovullo uses them as the season gets underway.
DH (2): Pavin Smith, Randal Grichuk
Smith (first base) and Grichuk (left field) can play in the field should Lovullo want to use the DH spot to give one of his regular position players a day off from playing in the field.
Bench/Utility (1): Garrett Hampson
The final bench spot was one of the big competitions coming into camp. And Hampson beat out fellow veteran Ildemaro Vargas for it. Hampson¡¯s speed and ability to play the outfield as well as three infield positions set him apart.
Starting pitchers (5): Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Eduardo Rodriguez, Brandon Pfaadt
The final spot in the rotation was the biggest competition coming into camp and it went to Pfaadt over Montgomery and Ryne Nelson. The team had planned on carrying both Montgomery and Nelson as relievers, but Montgomery¡¯s injury changed that.
Relief pitchers (8): A.J. Puk, Justin Martinez, Bryce Jarvis, Joe Mantiply, Jalen Beeks, Ryan Thompson, Ryne Nelson, Shelby Miller
Lovullo intended to name a set closer when camp opened, but instead will split duties between the left-handed Puk and righty Martinez based on matchups. Ginkel going on the IL allowed the team to keep both Jarvis and Miller. The injury to Montgomery left the Diamondbacks one spot light in the 'pen. And they made up for that by signing Beeks, who had opted out of his Minor League deal with the Astros over the weekend.
