The Mariners are cornering the market on right-handed pitchers named Luis Castillo.
Seattle reached a Minor League deal with 29-year-old Luis Felipe Castillo on Tuesday, a source told MLB.com¡¯s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal, which includes a Spring Training invite.
He¡¯s not to be confused with 32-year-old Luis Miguel Castillo, who has pitched for Seattle since the club acquired him from the Reds prior to the 2022 Trade Deadline.
The Mariners¡¯ newest Castillo spent the past two seasons in Japan¡¯s Nippon Professional Baseball, posting a 3.01 ERA with 108 strikeouts and 21 walks over 143 1/3 innings. He has three games of MLB experience under his belt, all with the Tigers back in 2022. Coincidentally, he made his big league debut on Aug. 6 of that year, just three days after the other Luis Castillo made his first start for the Mariners following the trade.
Luis F. Castillo will look to earn a spot on the big league club during Spring Training, though it remains to be seen if he¡¯ll end up pitching alongside Luis M. Castillo, who has been involved in trade rumblings this offseason.
