Seiya taking BP with a samurai sword is exactly as cool as it sounds
Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki stepped into the batting cage recently to take some cuts.
Literally.
Ahead of next week¡¯s Tokyo Series, the native of Japan stepped into the right-handed batter¡¯s box wielding not a baseball bat but a SAMURAI SWORD -- and what came next was exactly what you¡¯d expect ... and more.
Taking a few light hacks, Suzuki sliced up baseball after unlucky baseball. His final swing of a short video posted to social media actually sent half a ball tumbling into the Cubs¡¯ videographer, but considering Suzuki¡¯s instrument of choice, it probably could have been worse. (Suzuki made contact on every pitch, by the way -- there weren¡¯t any of THIS kind of sword, to be clear.)
Suzuki isn¡¯t the first Japanese star to hone his hitting skills with a samurai sword, either. Famed slugger Sadaharu Oh was known to do the same, and considering he hit a record 868 professional home runs, it¡¯s safe to say that the unconventional training certainly couldn¡¯t have hurt.
Unfortunately, Suzuki will have to revert to traditional lumber when the Cubs and Dodgers open the 2025 season on March 18 at the Tokyo Dome. It remains to be seen if the bat is mightier than the sword.
