Matzek joining Yanks on Minor League deal (source)
The Yankees and left-handed reliever Tyler Matzek are in agreement on a Minor League deal, a source told MLB.com¡¯s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the report, which comes a couple of days after the Yankees brought back lefty Tim Hill on a one-year contract.
The 34-year-old Matzek was a star setup man for the Braves when they won the World Series in 2021. He posted a 2.57 ERA with 77 strikeouts over 63 regular-season innings. He was even better in the postseason, allowing just three runs in 15 2/3 innings and striking out 24 batters.
Matzek took a step back in 2022 as his ERA rose to 3.50 over 43 2/3 innings and his four-seam fastball velocity fell from 96 mph to 94.1. He also missed about six weeks during the year due to left shoulder inflammation and ended up undergoing Tommy John surgery that October.
He returned to the mound at the start of last season but gave up 11 runs in 11 appearances before he was shelved with left elbow inflammation. His fastball clocked in at 93.6 mph. In July, Matzek was traded to the Giants, but he was soon released and re-signed by the Braves the following month. He didn¡¯t appear in an MLB game after Aug. 4 and finished the season with a 9.90 ERA.
