Veteran outfielder signs a one-year deal
HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros have re-signed veteran outfielder Ben Gamel to a one-year Major League contract, Astros General Manager Dana Brown announced today. Additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Gamel, 32, appeared in 20 games for the Astros in 2024 after being claimed off waivers from the Mets on August 20. In his Astros debut, he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI in a 6-0 win on August 22 at Baltimore. In his 20 games overall with the Astros, Gamel hit .259 (15x58) with 13 runs, three doubles, one home run, four RBI and 11 walks with a .739 OPS. The left-handed hitting outfielder missed the last 13 games of the 2024 regular season due to a left fibula fracture sustained while running into the wall after making a catch on Sept. 14 vs. the Angels in Anaheim.
Gamel is a veteran of nine Major League seasons between the New York Yankees (2016), Seattle Mariners (2016-18), Milwaukee Brewers (2019-20), Cleveland Guardians (2021), Pittsburgh Pirates (2021-22), San Diego Padres (2023), New York Mets (2024) and Houston Astros (2024-25). For his career, he¡¯s batted .252 (516x2046) with 112 doubles, 15 triples, 41 home runs, 204 RBI and a .716 OPS.
