Indians reportedly have deal with CarGo
March 16: The Indians have agreed to a Minor League deal with free-agent outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, according to multiple reports Saturday night. The club has not confirmed the deal.
Gonzalez will be a non-roster invitee to Spring Training. If he makes Cleveland's Major League roster, the deal will pay him a $2 million base salary and come with $1 million in incentives, according to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.
Gonzalez hit .276/.329/.467 with 16 home runs in 132 games with the Rockies last season. The 33-year-old has 231 homers over his 11-year big league career.
With rotation injuries, could Yankees look to Gio?
March 15: According to MLB Network insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees maintain some level of interest in Gio González, who remains unsigned. However, Heyman hasn¡¯t received word that anything is close between the two sides.
With Luis Severino out until May due to right rotator cuff inflammation and CC Sabathia also expected to miss some time as he gets up to speed after undergoing right knee surgery in October and an angioplasty in December, it wouldn¡¯t be surprising to see the Yankees add another starter.
Although the Yanks traded for James Paxton and re-signed J.A. Happ and Sabathia in the offseason, the club lacks depth behind their projected starting five, which could be a problem even if Severino is able to make it back by May 1. Paxton has dealt with frequent injuries during his career, and both Happ and Sabathia are over 35 years old. After its top five starters, New York has Domingo German, Jonathan Loaisiga, Luis Cessa and Chance Adams.
When Severino¡¯s shoulder problem first surfaced earlier this month, general manager Brian Cashman said that the club was focused on its in-house options, but it¡¯s possible the team¡¯s stance has changed with Severino now expected to miss all of April.
Among the starters remaining on the free-agent market, there's a steep dropoff after Dallas Keuchel and Gonzalez. Gonzalez has recorded an ERA over 4.00 in two of the past three years, but he owns a lifetime 3.69 ERA and has made at least 31 starts in eight seasons.
