GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- One of the Reds¡¯ top prospects, first baseman Cam Collier, will begin his 2025 season on the injured list because he needs left thumb surgery.
Collier, who is ranked by MLB Pipeline as Cincinnati's No. 4 prospect and No. 90 overall, tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb while applying a tag in a game vs. the Cubs on March 2. His hand has since been immobilized.
The surgery to repair the injury was scheduled for Thursday and it will be performed in Arizona by hand surgeon Dr. Donald Sheridan.
Collier, 20, is expected to miss four-to-six weeks for recovery. That means he will miss the Spring Breakout game vs. the Brewers prospects on March 16.
¡°It¡¯s not like it¡¯s a lost year," Reds manager Terry Francona said. "I told him it¡¯s a hiccup for a kid that age. Hopefully while he¡¯s down, he can just kill his legs and turn something that could be perceived as a negative into a positive.¡±
The Reds selected Collier 18th overall in the 2022 Draft and last season was his most productive as a professional. He batted .248 with a .798 OPS, 20 home runs and 74 RBIs in 119 games for High-A Dayton.
This spring marked Collier's first big league camp as a non-roster invitee. In eight games, he was 1-for-8 with one RBI.
