LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw continues to rewrite the Dodgers' record book and rarely reveals his emotions about it. But when he moves past Sandy Koufax, as he did in Thursday night's 8-2 win over the Padres, it shows.
Kershaw took over third place on the all-time franchise strikeout list, ahead of Koufax and behind Don Sutton (2,696) and Don Drysdale (2,486). In his locker was the ball used to fan Austin Hedges for strikeout No. 2,397, authenticated and already encased in Plexiglas.
¡°I heard the crowd, but I was a little bit frustrated with myself at the time,¡± said Kershaw, who walked a season-high five.
¡°I have the ball right here. It¡¯s really cool, any time you get mentioned in the same breath as Sandy. He wouldn¡¯t be proud of this one, though. Thankful I got through six. Can¡¯t even talk about it, I was so bad.¡±
Kershaw earned his 20th career victory over the Padres. He is 10-2 with a 2.85 ERA, has pitched at least six innings in every start this year and has 16 quality starts in 19 tries.
