PHOENIX -- The D-backs made a pair of roster moves prior to Monday's game with the Astros, optioning pitcher Jake Barrett to Triple-A Reno and placing outfielder David Peralta on the paternity list.
Right-hander Silvino Bracho was recalled from Reno to take the place of Barrett. Bracho has ridden the Triple-A shuttle throughout this year as this is his seventh stint with the D-backs in 2017.
Veteran right-hander J.J. Hoover was recalled from Reno to give the D-backs an extra arm in the bullpen while Peralta, whose wife gave birth to the couple's first child Monday, is out. Peralta can miss a maximum of three games while on the paternity list.
Barrett pitched well after being called up July 7 and had worked his way into higher-leverage situations before scuffling in his last two outings. Sunday, he allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings.
"I felt like when he first came to us he was throwing the ball extremely well, and things weren't as easy or pristine as they have been," D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of Barrett's last two outings. "I know he had some really good moments. But we felt like [Sunday], it was probably something that was needed for him to go down and get himself sharpened up again. We'll see him again. We know that. Jake's got great stuff. It's been a grinding year for him. But I think we'll see him a lot sooner than later."
Hoover had a 1-1 record and a 4.82 ERA in 36 appearances for the D-backs earlier this year.
Ray set to start rehab
Robbie Ray, who has been on the disabled list since being hit in the head by a 108 mph line drive July 28, is scheduled to make a rehab start for Class A Advanced Visalia on Thursday.
Ray faced hitters last Saturday in a simulated game, but this will be his first real game action.
"We had a lot of discussions about what direction we can go in and what we should do," Lovullo said. "We felt that was the best situation for Robbie and the best situation for what we need to do as an organization to help him get ready for the challenges of getting back here."
Ray was placed in Major League Baseball's concussion protocol program, but his recovery has gone smoothly.
"These are delicate things," Lovullo said. "You have to really take your time with it. Robbie is on a very good path."
Meeting of the coaches
Lovullo hosted Earl Watson, head coach of the NBA Phoenix Suns, on Monday. Watson and Lovullo both have ties with UCLA, and the D-backs manager presented his counterpart with a personalized jersey.
