Dodgers-Brewers G2: Shaw, Puig join lineups

MILWAUKEE -- Brewers manager Craig Counsell conceded in the run-up to the National League Championship Series that he knew a best-of-seven series was different than a best-of-five NL Division Series. Then he went out and managed Game 1 the same way.
Counsell dug deep into his bullpen for a 6-5 win in Game 1 on Friday night that left the Dodgers rueing their defensive mistakes, but feeling good about taking a bite out of the Brewers' bullpen. There won't be much time to rest; Game 2 is this afternoon.

Starting lineups
Dodgers: Although Cody Bellinger is 0-for-15 in the postseason, he hit one ball to the warning track Friday night and also was robbed of a hit in the ninth inning. It wasn't enough to keep him in the lineup for Game 2, however, as Chris Taylor moves to center and Yasiel Puig gets the start in right.

   Brewers: Like Game 2 of the Brewers' NLDS against the Rockies, Game 1 against the Dodgers was a complete effort. Nine players collected a hit, led by Lorenzo Cain's three after he went 1-for-12 in the NLDS. With another lefty on the mound for Los Angeles, Counsell rolls this lineup.

    Who are the starting pitchers?
    Dodgers: Ryu (7-3, 1.97 ERA in the regular season) starts Game 2 after throwing seven scoreless innings against the Braves at home in Game 1 of the NLDS. Ryu had a 3.48 ERA on the road compared to a 1.17 ERA at home. He will be pitching on eight days of rest.

Brewers: Miley (5-2, 2.57 ERA) takes the mound today after delivering what qualifies as a deep start for these Brewers in Game 3 of the NLDS, when he pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings before turning it over to that bullpen. It was Miley's 17th start this season, and the 17th time he yielded three or fewer runs.

How will the bullpens line up after the starter?
Dodgers: Los Angeles was pleased that Milwaukee used the bullpen for seven innings in Game 1, but the Dodgers also used back-end relievers Kenta Maeda and Pedro Báez in a loss, with closer Kenley Jansen warming up in the ninth inning. Those three still will likely form the core of any late, high-leverage sequence for the visitors.

Brewers: Counsell said the Brewers were in good shape, even after using Josh Hader for three innings and getting Jeremy Jeffress and Corey Knebel into the game. Look for rookie right-hander Corbin Burnes to play a multi-inning role in Game 2; he was electric in two appearances during the NLDS.
"We got possibilities -- a lot of possibilities -- for tomorrow," Counsell said.

Are there any relievers who are unavailable?
Dodgers:Julio Urías threw 24 pitches in Game 1 and hasn't pitched on back-to-back days since returning from shoulder surgery.

Brewers: Hader is off limits after throwing a season-high 46 pitches. With a 5-1 lead, it might have surprised some that Counsell sent Hader back out their for a third inning rather than preserve him for Game 2, but the Brewers have learned by experience that Hader requires rest to be effective.
"I threw Josh out there [for a third inning] because he was throwing the ball really well, and I thought once he had two innings, he was down for tomorrow anyway," Counsell said. "So he's got two days off now and he'll be ready to go again [in Game 3]."

Dodgers: No.
Brewers: No.
Who is hot and who is not?
Dodgers: Machado has three homers in five postseason games. Taylor had hits in his final three at-bats of Game 1, while Kemp had a pair of hits. Turner struck out four times in Game 1, although one came on a questionable call.

Brewers: Cain became the third Brewer to log three hits in the LCS, with Mark Brouhard (Game 4 of the 1982 American League Championship Series) and Corey Hart (Game 5 of the 2011 NLCS). Cain, the 2014 ALCS MVP Award winner, is now a .425 hitter in the LCS round in his career. After going hitless in the first two games of the NLDS, Aguilar has homered in consecutive games.
