The Cubs made an early-season move to bolster their bullpen, acquiring veteran left-hander Drew Pomeranz from the Mariners for a cash consideration, the club announced on Monday.
Pomeranz, 36, posted a 4.66 ERA in 9 2/3 innings this season with Triple-A Tacoma, recording 14 strikeouts and six walks. He will report to Triple-A Iowa.
The southpaw last appeared in the Majors in 2021, pitching to a 1.75 ERA in 27 appearances for the Padres. Pomeranz has logged just 19 1/3 innings across the last three Minor League seasons after tearing his flexor tendon late in August 2021.
In adding Pomeranz, the Cubs hope to address one of their early-season weaknesses: Entering play on Monday, Cubs' relievers had combined for a 5.19 ERA, the fourth-worst bullpen ERA in the Majors.
Pomeranz owns a career 3.91 ERA across parts of 11 MLB seasons with six teams.

Pomeranz pitched for Cubs manager Craig Counsell during the 2019 season with the Brewers, and came up in ClevelandĄ¯s system when current Cubs general manager Carter Hawkins was part of the Cleveland front office.
