Jayson Werth has gone from champion on the diamond to champion on the racetrack.
The racehorse that Werth co-owns, Dornoch, won the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of horse racing¡¯s Triple Crown, on Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. Dornoch put Werth into the winner¡¯s circle 16 years after he was a part of the Phillies¡¯ 2008 World Series title team. The race was moved to Saratoga Springs, N.Y., this year because Belmont Park is undergoing a renovation project.
The 15-year big leaguer who retired in 2018 said prior to last month¡¯s Kentucky Derby that he's ¡°a nervous wreck¡± before a race, although co-owning a thoroughbred and watching it race gives him ¡°an adrenaline rush like never before.¡±
Dornoch finished 10th in the Derby, but Werth¡¯s adrenaline must be flowing tonight. Considering how amped we¡¯ve seen him get on the baseball field before, it¡¯s pretty easy to envision how pumped up Werth must be on this triumphant day.
