SAN DIEGO -- Padres right-hander Luis Perdomo underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last week and is expected to miss the 2021 season, a team source confirmed Tuesday. The club has not confirmed the news.
Perdomo appeared in 10 games in 2020, posting a 5.71 ERA. He's endured an up-and-down five-year tenure in San Diego since his arrival during the '15 Rule 5 Draft.
Among current Padres, only Wil Myers and Dinelson Lamet were in the organization prior to Perdomo's arrival. But it¡¯s worth wondering whether Perdomo has thrown his final pitch for the organization.
In an ironic twist, it¡¯s the Rule 5 Draft that makes Perdomo's roster status tenuous. The organization is facing a roster crunch ahead of the Nov. 20 deadline to protect prospects from the Rule 5 Draft, and Perdomo is an option to be removed from the 40-man roster.
At various points in the past few seasons, Perdomo has showed the promise of a righty relief weapon, but he never quite pieced it all together.
It's unclear how or when Perdomo sustained his elbow injury. He faced the Dodgers on Sept. 16, was optioned two days later and he didn't pitch again after that.
