ANAHEIM -- Here's some of the reaction from the Mariners¡¯ clubhouse after Sunday¡¯s 2-1 loss to the Angels and the benches-clearing incident, including commentary from manager Scott Servais, shortstop J.P. Crawford, center fielder Julio Rodr¨ªguez, left fielder Jesse Winker and starting pitcher Marco Gonzales:
On the emotions of the day
? Servais: ¡°There's certainly a lot of stuff that probably shouldn¡¯t happen in the game that happened out there today. Emotions were running high, but it's pretty clear what was going on.¡±
? Gonzales: ¡°It was very intense. It lasted a long time and ... I'm just glad no one got seriously hurt. That¡¯s the best outcome that can come out of that.¡±
? Rodr¨ªguez: ¡°Every time I step on the field, I step out there to have fun and compete against the other team and beat them with baseball. Today was the same thing. Something unfortunately happened, but that was definitely something that was out of my hands.¡±
? Winker: ¡°The only thing I'm going to apologize for is flipping the fans off. As fans, they're spending their hard-earned money to come watch us play a game, and they didn't deserve that. So I apologize to the fans.¡±

On if there were lingering tensions entering Sunday
? Servais: ¡°You hope guys come out clear-headed and play the game the way it¡¯s supposed to be played the next day. But clearly, it wasn't. Last homestand, our guy [Justin Upton] got hit in the head [on June 17].¡±
? Gonzales: ¡°I think the tension was on their side. We didn't feel like there was anything that should have carried over. We were trying to win a game last night in the ninth inning, and the comments after the game last night on their side probably flared them up. But we're trying to win a game. I don't understand the tension from their side, really.¡±
? Rodr¨ªguez: ¡°Honestly, we¡¯re just trying to compete and play a fair game. You guys saw what we all saw too. ¡ I was just expecting to play a fun baseball game today."
? Winker: ¡°There was no intent behind Swanson's pitch [to Trout] yesterday, so I came to work today just ready to play a baseball game.¡±
? Crawford: ¡°I didn't think so, to be honest, no. There's only so many spots you can cover against [Trout], and that's one of the places, and yeah, I didn't see this coming at all.¡±
On the Angels shifting to use an opener
? Servais: ¡°They switched [to] an opener [who threw] some balls at us, and it got out of hand from there. It was kind of a black eye. It¡¯s been a very good series, a competitive series, whatever. Then it kind of got crazy there in the second inning. I¡¯ve often said, when people show you who they are, believe them.¡±
? Gonzales: ¡°My only comment is it's classless. To throw at Julio, who's a kid, over something that happened last night when we were trying to win a ballgame in the ninth inning, then we put the tying run on base. I mean, it¡¯s just classless to come out and change your pitcher before the game, and it's clear. The intention is clear. They call down to the bullpen right after the first pitch is thrown and they knew what they were doing.¡±
? Crawford: ¡°It¡¯s odd. We all saw what they were doing. We were just trying to handle our business and go about it our way. We all knew what they were doing at that point. We¡¯re not dumb. Nobody needs to be using an opener, especially with a good starter like [Jos¨¦] Suarez [coming in after]. We all knew what was going on.¡±

On the fracas
? Gonzales: ¡°We had some guys on the ground and some guys coming up. So I was trying to pull people off. I got grabbed and kind of yanked around. I was just trying to keep my head on a swivel.¡±
? Crawford: ¡°I always tell them, I¡¯ve got their back. ... Just know that I¡¯ve got your back. When stuff hits the fan, I¡¯m going to be the first one out there every time. I¡¯m going to do that 10 times out of 10 times. I¡¯ve always got my boys¡¯ backs.¡±
On if the feud with the Angels is over
? Servais: ¡°We¡¯re going to keep playing baseball and play the game the right way. I don¡¯t think there¡¯s any point in getting to that level in the game today. This is not the 1960s or 70s.¡±
? Rodr¨ªguez: ¡°Man, I would hope. I¡¯m just trying to beat everybody with baseball. That¡¯s why I step on the field, to be the best baseball player I can. I¡¯m not trying to fight [anybody]. If we¡¯re going to play a baseball game, try to beat each other with baseball and not anything else.¡±
? Crawford: ¡°Honestly, we¡¯ll see. I don¡¯t know. We¡¯ll see.¡±
