8 new Minor League concessions items you'll want to try
Baseball develops some of its best elements in the Minor Leagues, from the talent of players, to ballpark promotions to rule changes. That also extends to food. Of course, you can get all your favorites -- Cracker Jacks, hot dogs, cotton candy, beer, cola and all the rest -- at any Minor League park, but almost all of them also offer regional specialties, experimental festive fare or a combination of both.
Here are eight new food items, concocted through that old Minor League spirit of innovation and experimentation, that you¡¯ll be able to find at a MiLB park in 2024.
Sweet Pig Burger
Lehigh Valley IronPigs -- Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies
The IronPigs, as you might have guessed, have a thing for bacon. They also have a thing for, well, just about every kind of food. So robust is the Lehigh Valley concessions scene that the team maintains a standalone website dedicated entirely to in-park offerings. One of several new additions this year is the Sweet Pig Burger, which gets the ¡°sweet pig¡± part of its moniker from the black peppercorn candied bacon it¡¯s topped with. It also includes candied jalape?os and is served on a brioche bun.
Frycuterie Box
West Michigan Whitecaps -- High-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers
Charcuterie boards have had what they call a moment in what they call the foodie social media world. The Whitecaps, perennial concessions pioneers, have taken the craze to a new level with an assortment of fried deliciousness. The Frycuterie Box, served in a pizza box, includes waffle fries, ¡°mini mashers,¡± cheese curds, jalape?o bacon firecrackers and a minimum of three sauces (¡°rich nacho cheese, tangy BBQ sauce, and zesty chili¡±).
PB&J Bacon Hot Dog
Midland RockHounds -- Double-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics
We¡¯re cheating a little bit here, as the PB&J Bacon Hot Dog has been available at Momentum Bank Ballpark in past seasons, but it hasn't been advertised until now. In fact, the bacon in this item was initially ¡°thrown on as a joke,¡± per the team, but that addition made the whole thing taste too good to forget. The RockHounds are ready to get serious about the jape, and fans of hot dog-based culinary shenanigans will reap the benefits.
Pork roll, egg and cheese on a roll
Jersey Shore BlueClaws -- High-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies
Pork roll (a processed meat log no doubt more appetizing than its textbook definition) is a New Jersey staple, as are the BlueClaws. This season, they¡¯ve joined forces, as a Taylor Pork Roll stand opens at ShoreTown Ballpark. A number of creative takes on pork roll items will be available, and the BlueClaws are also serving up the classic ¨C pork roll, egg and cheese on a roll. Breakfast and baseball go well together any time.
Vegetarian Fusion Bowl
Albuquerque Isotopes -- Triple-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies
It was not so long ago that vegetarians, like many people with specific dietary restrictions or preferences, could reasonably describe their dinner options at sporting events along a spectrum of ¡°fairly limited¡± to ¡°virtually nonexistent.¡± Those days are behind us, and nothing illustrates that fact quite so vibrantly as Albuquerque¡¯s Vegetarian Fusion Bowl. A dish that will likely appeal to omnivores as well, it¡¯s built around a plant-based pork substitute and features crispy vegetables, kimchee, cilantro, jalape?os, pickled onions, a creamy avocado drizzle and a hoisin-ginger-soy sauce blend served atop rice. Who¡¯s drooling?
Margarita Shrimp Tacos
Pensacola Blue Wahoos -- Double-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins
Originally an experiment of the Blue Wahoos¡¯ ¡°Funky Taco Night¡± in seasons past, the Margarita Shrimp Tacos are here to stay in 2024. The item presents a twist on the phrase ¡°shrimp cocktail,¡± with Adobo seasoned shrimp, house Smokey slaw, margarita guacamole, pico de gallo and lime crema. Pensacola¡¯s season hasn¡¯t started yet, but it¡¯s already the taco the town.
Rally Cap Injectable Donut Holes
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers -- High-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers
Timber Rattler fans have known and loved the team's cinnamon sugar donut holes for a few years now. This year, Wisconsin is offering a dizzyingly intriguing innovation on them. The Rally Cap Injectable Donut Holes are warmed and tossed in the standard cinnamon-sugar blend, but also given an injection of raspberry sauce, chocolate sauce or Bavarian cream. Any two injections are covered with purchase of the donut holes, and all three can be had for an extra $2.50. The ¡°Rally Cap¡± in question is the souvenir helmet in which these bad boys are served.
Saints Sundae
St. Paul Saints -- Triple-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins
Some days there¡¯s just not enough ice cream or candy. The Saints, saints that they are, are working to make sure nobody ever has one of those days at CHS Field. The Saints Sundae includes THREE full-sized candy bars of the top-shelf variety -- Skor, Snickers and 3 Musketeers -- as well as Oreos, Reese¡¯s Peanut Butter Cups, caramel, fudge, whipped cream and a cherry on top. Your ice cream options are chocolate, vanilla or both, and, of course, the base-bowl can be collected and used whenever you want to attempt to recreate this transcendental experience at home.
