San Diego culture, colors highlight Padres' City Connect unis
The Padres unveiled their Nike City Connect Series jerseys on July 1, with a nod to their binational fanbase and colors that highlight the vibrancy of the region's coastal community.
The uniforms were featured for the first time on July 8, and the Padres will wear them for every subsequent Friday home game after that.
The colorful uniforms feature sleeves of pink and mint, with "San Diego" emblazoned across the chest in those same hues. They feature outlines of yellow, and -- taken as a whole -- the uniforms are meant to match the vibrant colors of San Diego's fabled pink and yellow sunsets beyond the Pacific Ocean.
They're also a nod to the landscapes and artwork of San Diego and the nearby Baja peninsula. A sizeable portion of the team's fanbase hails from Tijuana, Mexico, and the surrounding areas in Baja California.
¡°Two cities, two cultures, one home team,¡± said Padres third baseman Manny Machado in the team¡¯s jersey release video.
The corresponding hats feature the typical interlocking SD -- but in a vibrant shade of pink, set upon on a mint-colored hat. The pants are white with a mint stripe.
The Padres are the seventh and final team to release their City Connect uniforms this season -- joining the Rockies, Astros, Royals, Angels, Brewers and Nationals. Each jersey design is "a celebration of the unique personality, traditions and values that unite the fans of every club," according to a release sent by the team on Friday.
The Padres unveiled the uniforms in a video on Friday morning narrated by legendary skateboarder -- and noted Padres fan -- Tony Hawk. They'll don them for the first time on July 8 against the Giants, with first pitch slated for 6:40 p.m. PT.
