Red Sox rally twice, top Nats in Florida finale

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- American League Rookie of the Year candidate Andrew Benintendi continued his successful Spring Training with two hits, including a triple, as the Red Sox rolled to an 8-1 victory over the Nationals on Thursday afternoon at JetBlue Park.
It was the first of three games in three days at three different venues for the two teams.
Red Sox veteran Dustin Pedroia added two hits, including a two-run double, in the leadoff spot. The Nats also got a solid performance from their leadoff man, as Trea Turner was 2-for-3. Adam Lind added two hits for the Nats.

"They're ready to go," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "There's a lot of work every time we come to Spring Training. There's a lot of work to get done. And we've been able to accomplish that. I couldn't be more proud of the way our position players and really everybody went about their work. There was a high intensity from Day 1 and this portion of Spring Training as it closes in Florida, we're prepared to take the next step."

Joe Ross, penciled in as Washington's No. 5 starter, gave up eight hits and four runs over five innings, walking two and striking out seven.

Veteran non-roster invitee Kyle Kendrick, who is slated to open the season at Triple-A Pawtucket, finished his strong Spring Training (4-0, 2.18 ERA) by allowing one earned run and no walks over four innings while striking out five.

"He's shown in Spring Training the ability to get a key ground ball in some spots to get a double play," said Farrell. "He's very poised. The game is under control from the time he is on the mound. Everything that is within his control, he certainly performed to the best of his abilities."
