DENVER -- Scott Oberg, a key right-hander in the Rockies¡¯ bullpen before multiple bouts with thoracic outlet syndrome kept him off the field for good after the 2019 season, announced Tuesday that he will end his comeback attempt and accept a part-time position with the club as a special assistant to baseball operations.
Oberg, 32, appeared in 259 regular-season games from 2015-19, going 18-8 with a 3.85 ERA and seven saves. The biggest moment for Oberg was the 2018 National League Wild Card Game, when he struck out all four batters he faced in the 12th and 13th for the win in a 2-1 victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Oberg has had four occurrences of blood clots in his right arm since 2016. He had aborted comeback attempts in '20 and during Spring Training in '21. Since his last comeback attempt, he has helped the Rockies in various capacities -- lending experience to relievers, consulting with the front office and analytics staffs, as well as helping with scouting and the Draft. Additionally, Oberg was the Rockies¡¯ player representative to the MLB Players Association.
Here is Oberg¡¯s announcement, posted on Instagram, along with pictures from his career (including his single at-bat, a strikeout in 2019) and with family and friends:
¡°I have accepted a part-time position with the Rockies and will no longer be pursuing the game I¡¯ve loved my whole life, as a player. I cannot thank those closest to me enough; from my family, friends, teammates and especially having the unwavering support of my wife. I could not have been able to accomplish anything without any of you. Love you all.
¡°Unfortunately the numerous blood clots I suffered over the course of my career has made playing untenable. But I also cannot thank the numerous training, medical, and surgeons I have encountered over the years enough. Everyone played a vital role in helping me at every turn and I am forever in your debt.
¡°And for all my coaches from T-Ball to College, from Tewksbury to Storrs to everywhere in-between and throughout pro-ball, thank you for teaching me the right way to play the game and helping make the most out of my ability. I¡¯m also indebted to my mental performance coach, Danielle! You literally changed my life and I cannot thank you enough.
¡°Hope everyone enjoys some of my favorite moments I¡¯ve had at the highest level and thank you to the fans for always showing your support through the highs and lows.¡±
