Monday's World Baseball Classic Qualifiers featured a showdown of superstar baseball legacy vs. superstar tennis legacy -- and baseball won.
Lucas Ramirez, the son of Red Sox legend Manny Ramirez, faced Jaden Agassi, the son of tennis Hall of Famers Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf, during Brazil's game against Germany at Veterans Memorial Stadium at Kino Sports Complex in Tucson, Ariz. And Ramirez knocked a base hit off Agassi.
Ramirez, a 19-year-old outfield prospect who was drafted by the Angels in the 17th round last year, is wearing Manny's No. 24 for his mother's native Brazil in the tournament. He had a multihit game Monday.
The 23-year-old Agassi is pitching for Germany, where Graf was born. Graf and Agassi, who won 30 tennis Grand Slams between them, were both in attendance to watch Jaden pitch in Monday's game.
Agassi did manage to win a matchup with a different son of a Major Leaguer. He got Dante Bichette Jr., son of Dante Bichette (and older brother of the Blue Jays' Bo Bichette), to ground into a forceout.
