MILWAUKEE ¨C The Padres have placed ace Yu Darvish on the 15-day IL with neck tightness.
The move is retroactive to April 15.
Darvish last pitched on Sunday against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, giving up four hits and three runs over five innings. He was scheduled to make his next start on Saturday against the Blue Jays in San Diego.
Padres manager Mike Shildt said he doesn¡¯t expect Darvish to be out for an extended period of time, but hasn't named a starter to replace him this weekend.
¡°It¡¯s an upper neck issue, tightness,¡± Shildt said. ¡°It¡¯s just a matter of getting some rest and taking a little bit of a blow from it.¡±
Darvish, 37, had his 2023 season ended early by an elbow injury, and has dealt with back and neck issues in the past. He was on the injured list with a neck injury in 2013.
He¡¯s 0-1 with a 4.18 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP in five starts (23 2/3 innings) this season to go along with 22 strikeouts and 10 walks.
Darvish is in the second year of a six-year, $108 million extension with the Padres. The veteran right-hander¡¯s deal runs through the 2028 season, when Darvish will turn 42. He¡¯s in his fourth season overall with the organization.
He went 8-10 with a 4.56 ERA last season.
To fill Darvish¡¯s spot, the Padres recalled Logan Gillaspie, who has logged five appearances for Triple-A El Paso this season. Gillaspie has made 28 career Major League appearances ¨C all with the Orioles ¨C and logged a 6.00 ERA in 11 relief outings last year.
