With their win in Game 1 of the NLCS, the Brewers won free burgers for Wisconsin
With their 6-5 win over the Dodgers in Game 1 of the NLCS, the Brewers extended their winning streak to 12. They haven't lost since Sept. 22., but, more importantly, they've earned free food for the state of Wisconsin.
That's because local restaurant chain George Webb has promised Wisconsinites that they'll receive free burgers if the team wins 12 games in a row, honoring a promotion from the 1940s when the owner of the chain predicted team winning streaks prior to each season. When George's son Jim took over the company, he formalized the promotion that a 12-game winning streak would net free burgers for the city.
They did it!!! (We always knew they would!) In honor of George Webb¡¯s famous prediction, we will be giving away FREE BURGERS* on Thursday, 10/18 from 2PM to 6PM. Plus, we¡¯ll have special pricing on other menu items including fries, soft drinks, and more. *Limit 1 per person. pic.twitter.com/gpApnsNl8H

"Who knew that we would make it this far," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said, "and the biggest piece of stress going into this game would be George Webb's hamburgers?"
Counsell knows the promotion well. His dad worked in the Brewers' front office during the 1980s, and Counsell was in the stands for the Brewers' famous Easter Sunday comeback in '87, which gave them 12 straight victories to begin the season, and sealed free hamburgers for the populous.
"I remember the concept of free hamburgers going back so long, it's hard to believe that it's never happened since then," Counsell said. "I guess it's a pretty good streak. But it's something for everybody to talk about for sure, and I mean, free hamburgers is free hamburgers. I know you all will be there."
The last time the Brewers had such a winning streak was 1987, leading the restaurant to give away 170,000 free burgers. In the age of the internet and social media, we'd expect that number to be even greater this time around. Taking a 1-0 lead in the NLCS is nice on it's own. A free burger is sure to make it even better.
