Players of the Week: Garc¨Şa, Tatis, MadBum
Fernando Tatis Jr. and Madison Bumgarner were named National League Co-Players of the Week on Monday, and Adolis García was named the American League Player of the Week.?
Tatis earned his share of the NL honors with a monster series against the rival Dodgers, while Bumgarner pitched a seven-inning no-hit game against the Braves.
Tatis batted .385 with five home runs, four stolen bases, seven RBIs and nine runs scored in his seven games over the week. The Padres shortstop hit all five of those homers in three games against the Dodgers, including back-to-back two-home-run games off Clayton Kershaw and Trevor Bauer, making him the first player in MLB history to homer multiple times in consecutive games against former Cy Young Award winners.
The first of Tatis' multi-homer games even came on the 22nd anniversary of the day his father, Fernando Tatis Sr., hit two grand slams in one inning -- also at Dodger Stadium.
Bumgarner, meanwhile, tossed a complete-game victory in the second game of a seven-inning doubleheader against Atlanta without allowing a single hit. The D-backs lefty struck out seven in the game.
Bumgarner's performance came after Zac Gallen pitched a one-hitter in the first game of the doubleheader. The D-backs became the first team to ever allow one total hit or fewer in a doubleheader, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
In the AL, Garc¨Şa hit .333 and slugged .875 for the week with four home runs and nine RBIs.
In the process, he completed a stretch of homering five times in his first 10 games of the season. The first three of those home runs gave the Rangers a lead, making him the third player in franchise history to hit go-ahead homers for his first three career home runs, after Jurickson Profar in 2012-13 and Billy Sample in 1979.
This is the second career Player of the Week Award for both Tatis, who also won in August 2020, and Bumgarner, who won in 2015 with the Giants. It's the first career Player of the Week Award for Garc¨Şa.?The Padres have already had three Player of the Week Award winners this season, as Tatis joins Eric Hosmer and Joe Musgrove.
