Colom¨¦ inks deal with Rox to fortify bullpen
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Rockies added experience to the back of the bullpen by finalizing a one-year deal Thursday with righty reliever Alex Colom¨¦.
To make room for Colom¨¦ on the 40-man roster, the Rockies placed right-handed pitcher Scott Oberg on the 60-day injured list.
Colom¨¦, 33, made 67 appearances for the Twins last season, and went 4-4 with 17 saves and a 4.15 ERA. Colom¨¦ has 155 career saves, including an American League-leading 47 with the Rays in 2017. In 2016, he earned 37 saves and represented the club in the All-Star Game.
Additionally, Colom¨¦ has pitched for the Mariners (2018) and White Sox (2019-20). During the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Colom¨¦ posted a 0.81 ERA with 18 saves in 21 regular-season appearances for Chicago, and made his first two postseason appearances (both scoreless).?
After the ¡¯17 season, Colom¨¦ was on the Rockies¡¯ radar, but he ended up with the Mariners. Then, the Rockies signed Greg Holland, who led the National League in saves in 2018 as the club made the postseason for the first time since 2009.?
One of manager Bud Black¡¯s wishes this offseason was to add a veteran capable of closing games. Last year, Daniel Bard handled the ninth inning for much of the season, and Carlos Est¨¦vez finished the year in the role. Signing Colom¨¦ means Bard, Est¨¦vez and right-handers Jhoulys Chac¨ªn, Tyler Kinley and Robert Stephenson can settle into setup roles.
By putting experience in the late innings, the Rockies will have more development opportunities with a crew of hard-throwing right-handers that includes Jordan Sheffield, Justin Lawrence and Julian Fern¨¢ndez, all of whom debuted in the Majors last year and showed velocity that could make them late-inning arms.
