ANAHEIM -- The Angels made a flurry of roster moves on Wednesday, including placing third baseman Anthony Rendon on the injured list with a left knee contusion.

The club also reinstated reliever Mike Mayers and recalled outfielders Juan Lagares and Taylor Ward from Triple-A Salt Lake. To make room on the big league roster, reliever James Hoyt was optioned and submarine-style reliever Ben Rowen was designated for assignment.

Rendon went down on Monday after fouling a ball off his knee during an at-bat against the Rays. He required assistance to leave the field and was removed from the game. He received an MRI on Wednesday, but manager Joe Maddon did not provide any additional information on the injury to reporters on Wednesday.

Lagares, a former Gold Glove-winning center fielder with the Mets in 2014, made his return to the lineup with a start in left field against the Rays on Wednesday. He was on the IL after sustaining a left calf strain during the club¡¯s first road trip. Lagares last played with the big league club on April 10 against the Blue Jays.

Ward joins the Angels for the first time this year and got the start in right field on Wednesday. He had a successful Spring Training, hitting .400 with a 1.364 OPS and eight RBIs in 25 at-bats.

Left fielder Justin Upton and catcher Max Stassi also exited Tuesday¡¯s game with injuries. Upton said prior to Wednesday¡¯s game that he ¡°came in in better spirits¡± and declared himself day to day after he suffered a left knee contusion.

The injuries and depth issues prevented starter and two-way player Shohei Ohtani from pulling double duty in his start against the Rays on Wednesday.

"It was my choice to not hit him today just based on availability off the bench. Stass was banged up, and J-Up was banged up a little bit,¡± Maddon said. ¡°So if things went poorly early, just never know that all of a sudden it becomes difficult to manage the game for us. So I chose to go with that direction.¡±

Pe?a nearing return
F¨¦lix Pe?a, who was sidelined by a hamstring injury during Spring Training, is close to making a return to the big league club, Maddon said. With the Angels' starters entering Wednesday ranked 28th in MLB in innings pitched (130) and 29th in ERA (5.54), Maddon said there hasn't been any early talks of Pe?a being used as a starter like he has in the past.
