Here's a look at the prospects Rizzo netted
Rumors have been swirling around the Cubs for quite some time now, but Thursday¡¯s deal was still a bit of a stunner. While there was always a chance Anthony Rizzo was going to get dealt, not many predicted he¡¯d go to the Yankees -- especially just hours after the club landed Joey Gallo.
In exchange, the Cubs received a pair of prospects from the Yankees in right-hander Alexander Vizcaino and outfielder Kevin Alcantara. Both immediately become top 10 prospects in the Cubs¡¯ system. Vizcaino, a 2016 international signee, has made just four appearances with High-A Hudson Valley this season, while Alcantara, a 2018 international signee, is hitting .360 through eight games in the FCL.
Here's a closer look at each prospect and where they rank on MLB Pipeline¡¯s Cubs Top 30:
Alexander Vizcaino, RHP (No. 6)
Vizcaino was nearly 19, elderly by international standards, when he signed with the Yankees for $14,000 out of the Dominican Republic in May 2016. After spending all but one game of his first three pro seasons in Rookie ball, where he didn't distinguish himself, he saw his fastball and changeup improve dramatically in 2019 before earning an invite to New York's alternate site last summer and a spot on their 40-man roster in November. He missed the first two months this season with shoulder issues but returned in July before going to the Cubs. Complete scouting report ?
Kevin Alcantara, OF (No. 9)
Younger and possessing a higher ceiling than most of the prospects in the 2018 international class, Alcantara signed with the Yankees for $1 million when he turned 16 on July 12. At the start of the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League season in June 2019, the Dominican was the lone 16-year-old on a U.S.-based Minor League team. His only real development last year came at New York's Dominican instructional league program, and he had just begun playing again this July when the Yankees sent him and Vizcaino to the Cubs for Rizzo.
