Stat of the Day: May 31, 2021

June 1st, 2021

MLB.com is keeping track of a Stat of the Day for the D-backs this season, highlighting a unique, interesting or fun nugget from each game.

May 31: Mets 6, D-backs 2 -- A very tough month
The D-backs closed out May with a 5-24 record, the most losses in a single calendar month in franchise history. The D-backs' .345 winning percentage is second-worst at the start of June in franchise history, behind their .304 mark on June 1 in Arizona's inaugural 1998 season.

May 30: D-backs 9, Cardinals 2 -- Lovullo passes Brenly
The D-backs' win not only snapped their 13-game losing streak, but it was also a milestone victory for manager Torey Lovullo. It was Lovullo's 304th career win, moving him ahead of Bob Brenly for the third most victories by a manager in franchise history.

May 29: Cardinals 7, D-backs 4 -- Longest slide in MLB since '16
The D-backs lost their 13th consecutive game, which marks the longest losing streak in MLB since the Twins dropped 13 in a row from Aug. 18-31, 2016. Arizona is now one loss shy of tying the longest losing streak in franchise history, which occurred from July 9-25, 2004, in a season in which it finished 51-111.

May 28: Cardinals 8, D-backs 6 -- Losing skid grows
The D-backs' losing streak reached 12 games on Friday night. The 12 straight losses is the second longest losing streak in franchise history. The only longer streak was 14 games during the 2004 season when the D-backs finished with a 51-111 record.

May 27: Cardinals 5, D-backs 4 -- It's been a while
D-backs right-hander Jon Duplantier made an emergency start in place of Matt Peacock, who was scratched due to a non-COVID illness. Duplantier, who had recently been called up and was expected to start over the weekend, spent last year at the team's alternate training site, where he struggled with injuries. This marked Duplantier's first big league start since June 11, 2019, against the Phillies in Philadelphia.

May 26: Giants 5, D-backs 4 -- Skid hits 10 games
The D-backs dropped their 10th straight, their longest losing streak since a 10-game skid from May 23-June 2, 2010. The D-backs went on to finish the year with a 65-97 mark, last in the National League West.

May 25: Giants 8, D-backs 0 -- More offensive struggles
During the D-backs' nine-game losing streak, they've scored only 16 runs, and six of those came in a loss to the Rockies on Saturday. This is the seventh time they've been held to two or fewer runs and the second time they've been shut out during the skid. After going 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position on Tuesday, Arizona is now 5-for-57 in those situations during the losing streak.

May 23: Rockies 4, D-backs 3 -- Road woes extended
The D-backs have lost 13 consecutive away games, marking the second-longest road losing streak in franchise history. The longest came from May 18-June 18, 2010, when Arizona dropped 14 straight road contests. The D-backs have gone winless on each of their past two road trips, getting swept by the Marlins, Mets, Dodgers and Rockies during that span.

May 22: Rockies 7, D-backs 6 -- Escobar extends hit streak to 8
While much of the D-backs' lineup has struggled over the past week, Eduardo Escobar has heated up. He extended his hitting streak to eight games with a 2-for-5 day that included a three-run homer in the seventh inning. During this streak, Escobar is 13-for-34 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. His batting average has increased from .200 to .235 during that stretch.

May 21: Rockies 7, D-backs 1 -- Offense can't cash in with RISP
The D-backs fell to 0-5 on their current road trip, as they previously got swept in four games by the Dodgers. Arizona has scored seven runs over those five losses, and a big reason has been its inability to come through with runners in scoring position, collecting only three hits in 28 at-bats in those situations.

May 20: Dodgers 3, D-backs 2 -- 'Man of Steal' gets caught
Tim Locastro is among the fastest players in baseball, with sprint speed in the 100th percentile. However, on Thusday, his sprint speed was no match for the arm of Dodgers catcher Will Smith, who threw Locastro out at second on an attempted steal in the eighth inning. It was just the second time that Locastro has ever been caught stealing. Earlier in the year, Locastro set the record for most stolen bases without being caught to begin a career, with 28 consecutive steals.

May 19: Dodgers 4, D-backs 2 -- D-backs' bullpen troubles
The D-backs' bullpen allowed three runs in the seventh inning of their loss to the Dodgers, continuing what has been a rough year for their relievers. From the seventh inning on this year, the D-backs have allowed 97 runs, far and away the most in baseball. The closest two teams are the Rockies and Reds, who have each allowed 76 runs from the seventh inning on.

May 18: Dodgers 9, D-backs 1 -- A long road back
Corbin Martin made his D-backs debut and allowed three runs on four hits over five innings. It was his first big league appearance since June 3, 2019 -- a span of 714 days -- when he faced the Mariners in Seattle as a member of the Astros. Martin underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2019 shortly before being traded to the D-backs, and he spent last year at Arizona's alternate training site as he rehabbed.

May 17: Dodgers 3, D-backs 1 -- LA keeps Bumgarner at bay
Madison Bumgarner took the loss Monday night at Dodger Stadium, allowing two runs over four innings. While he has won nine games in his career at Chavez Ravine, he has not picked up a win there in almost four years. He last found the win column at Dodger Stadium on Sept. 23, 2017.

May 16: Nationals 3, D-backs 0 -- Weaver excels at Chase Field
Before departing with right shoulder discomfort, Luke Weaver was having another stellar start at Chase Field, tossing four scoreless innings of one-hit ball. In four home starts, including Sunday, the right-hander is 2-0 with a 1.27 ERA. Meanwhile, he is 0-3 with an 8.20 ERA in four road starts.

May 15: D-backs 11, Nats 4 -- Escobar repeats history
Eduardo Escobar matched a career high with seven RBIs on a 3-for-5 night. He had a two-run single in the first, then swatted a pair of homers -- a three-run shot in the fourth and a two-run blast in the eighth. The only other time that Escobar has driven in seven runs in a game came on Aug. 3, 2019, which also happened to take place at Chase Field ... and also against the Nationals.

May 14: Nationals 17, D-backs 2 -- Peralta finally back on mound
David Peralta pitched the ninth inning of the series-opening loss. It was the first time that Peralta had set foot on a mound since 2011, when he threw one inning for Rio Grande Valley of the independent North American League. Peralta came up through the Cardinals' system as a pitcher before an arm injury temporarily ended his pro career in '07. Peralta reinvented himself as an outfielder and worked his way back up through independent ball.

May 13: Marlins 5, D-backs 1 -- Kelly leading way in OBP
D-backs catcher Carson Kelly again found his way on base multiple times. Kelly went 1-for-2, but he also drew a pair of walks to up his MLB-best on-base percentage to .491 (minimum 100 plate appearances).

May 12: Marlins 3, D-backs 2 -- Young makes his hits count
Nicknamed "Smasher" by D-backs manager Torey Lovullo, Andrew Young has four hits in 10 at-bats for the D-backs this year and all four of them are home runs. He hit his second pinch-hit homer of the year Wednesday night against the Marlins. Per Sportradar, the longest streak of hits to open a season being home runs since 1974 belongs to Rob Deer, whose first five hits of the 1992 season were homers.

May 11: D-backs 11, Marlins 3 -- Bumgarner's WHIP on a roll
Over his last five starts, Madison Bumgarner's WHIP (walks plus hits divided by innings pitched) is 0.47. That's the lowest WHIP by an NL pitcher over a five-start span since Hall of Famer Pete Alexander compiled a 0.42 WHIP over five starts in 1915.

May 10: D-backs 5, Marlins 2 -- Weaver's in the zone
D-backs right-hander Luke Weaver was a strike-throwing machine against the Marlins. Weaver faced 22 batters in 6 1/3 shutout innings and threw just 17 total balls in his 75 pitches.

May 9: Mets 4, D-backs 2 -- A trip to forget
The D-backs finished their road trip to Miami and New York with an 0-6 record. It is the first time they've gone winless on a road trip of six or more games since they went 0-9 on a trip to Denver, San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2010. The D-backs did go 0-5 on one trip last year against the A's and Giants.

May 8: Mets 4, D-backs 2 -- Another solid night for Kelly
After posting an 8.44 ERA through his first three starts of the season, Merrill Kelly has pitched much better of late. He allowed three runs (two earned) in 5 2/3 innings at New York, as the right-hander now owns a 3.22 ERA over his past four starts. Kelly has given up three or fewer runs in each of those four outings and he's struck out a season-high six in each of the past two.

May 7: Mets 5, D-backs 4 (10) -- Many ducks on the pond
During their current four-game losing streak, the D-backs have struggled to come through with runners in scoring position. They were 2-for-28 during their three-game sweep at the hands of the Marlins, and then 1-for-16 against the Mets making them 3-for-44 overall.

May 6: Marlins 3, D-backs 1 -- Kelly extends OBP streak
With his walk in the third inning, D-backs catcher Carson Kelly has extended his on-base streak to 18 straight games. The streak, which began on April 7, is a career-best for the 26-year-old backstop. From April 7 through Thursday, Kelly is slashing .294/.480/.667, going 15-for-51 with six home runs, 17 RBIs and 17 walks.

May 5: Marlins 8, D-backs 0 -- HR well runs dry for D-backs
The D-backsĄŻ run of 15 straight games with a home run came to an end in Wednesday's loss. It was the longest such streak by any team in the Majors this season, and it was tied for the second-longest streak in franchise history. It trailed the 22-game streak the D-backs established from Sept. 23, 2000 to April 15, 2001 -- the year they won their sole World Series.

May 4: Marlins 9, D-backs 3 -- Rojas continues XBH streak
With his solo home run in the fifth inning, Josh Rojas now has an extra-base hit in each of his last five games played, marking the longest such streak for the 26-year-old infielder. His previous best was back-to-back games with an extra-base hit. Since his streak began on April 29, Rojas is slashing .421/.450/1.105, going 8-for-19 with one double, four home runs and six RBIs.

May 2: D-backs 8, Rockies 4 -- Lovullo's 300th win
Torey Lovullo became the fourth manager in D-backs history to record 300 wins with the team, joining Kirk Gibson (353), Bob Melvin (337) and Bob Brenly (303). Lovullo was the second fastest to reach the milestone, doing so in 574 games. Brenly reached the mark in 549 games.

May 1: Rockies 14, D-backs 6 -- Kelly keeps streaking
Carson Kelly reached base for a career-best 16th consecutive game, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs and continuing his torrid start to the season. It's tied for the seventh longest on-base streak by a D-backs catcher. During that stretch, Kelly is 14-for-45 with six homers and 17 RBIs.
