Orioles fans who want a full tour of their system are among the most fortunate in baseball. These lucky souls can cover the entirety of Birdland without ever going more than 240 miles from Camden Yards, and two affiliates -- the High-A Aberdeen IronBirds and the Double-A Bowie Baysox -- are within a 40-minute drive.
And planning a sojourn through the system just got even easier, and more fun. Here are guides to each of the stops along the way:
Single-A: Delmarva Shorebirds, Perdue Stadium
On Maryland's Eastern Shore, where chicken is king, the Orioles still reign supreme. Grab some gelati, pay homage to Homer Smoot in the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame Museum and settle in to watch some of Baltimore's recent draftees compete in the Carolina League. Read more ?
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds, Leidos Field at Ripken Stadium
Owned by Cal Ripken Jr. and Bill Ripken, the IronBirds' park is part of a larger complex called the Ripken Experience Aberdeen, about 35 miles northeast of downtown Baltimore. Clearly, this South Atlantic League venue is a must-visit spot for O's fans, and anybody with a taste for crustaceans will want to secure a ticket to a "Crab Feast" night. Read more ?
Double-A: Bowie Baysox, Prince George's Stadium
Orioles prospects in the Eastern League play their home games at a facility within 30 miles of Camden Yards. Make sure to check out the colorful carousel down the right-field line, near the Orioles-colored lighthouse that serves as a tribute to the Chesapeake Bay. Read more ?
Triple-A Norfolk Tides, Harbor Park
Although the Baltimore prospects closest to the Majors play their home games at the park that's the farthest in the system from the mothership, this venue is still within a fairly easy day's drive. The stately Harbor Park is beloved by local fans for its barbecue, open concourses and, of course, great International League baseball. Read more ?
