A handful of big-name free agents have come off the board already. None bigger than Juan Soto, who agreed to a record-setting $765 million deal with the Mets on Sunday night, per sources. However, the free-agent market remains rich with talent, offering an abundance of options for clubs to bolster their rosters.

Does your favorite team need an ace starter? A power bat? A lights-out reliever? A standout defender? There are players available to address every need.

As this year¡¯s Winter Meetings get underway in Dallas, here is a breakdown of the best available players across the free-agent spectrum.

The elite starters: Corbin Burnes, Max Fried

Blake Snell found a new home when he signed a five-year, $182 million deal with the Dodgers, but two other top-flight starting pitchers are still available.

It was business as usual for Burnes after an offseason trade from the Brewers to the Orioles -- the right-hander recorded a 2.92 ERA with 181 K¡¯s over 194 1/3 innings in 2024.

Burnes won the NL Cy Young Award in 2021 and owns the second-best ERA (2.88) among pitchers with at least 500 innings over the past five years. The only hurler with a lower ERA in that time? Fried at 2.81. The lefty earned his second All-Star selection in 2024 and finished with a 3.25 ERA and 166 strikeouts over 174 1/3 innings for the Braves.

The star infielders: Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman, Christian Walker, Gleyber Torres

The best bats remaining on the open market reside in the infield. Willy Adames was arguably at the head of that list before he agreed to a seven-year deal with the Giants on Saturday, per a source.

That means the top free agent on the left side of the infield is Bregman, who has enjoyed a decorated nine-season run with the Astros. That period included two World Series rings, two All-Star selections, a Silver Slugger Award and a 2024 Gold Glove. The 30-year-old Bregman is coming off his third straight season with at least 20 homers and a 115 OPS+.

Across the diamond, Alonso and Walker bring a lot of power at first base. The 30-year-old Alonso will likely sign a longer and more lucrative contract, given he is younger than the 33-year-old Walker and has hit the second-most homers in the Majors (226) since debuting in 2019.

Walker, though, has plenty of appeal in his own right, combining 30-homer pop with solid defense. A three-time Gold Glove winner, Walker¡¯s 39 outs above average since the start of 2022 are more than double that of any other first baseman.

Torres¡¯ walk year was relatively disappointing (.709 OPS in 587 at-bats), but he surged late in the season, recording a .295/.375/.443 slash line over his final 50 games, postseason included.

The mid-tier starters: Jack Flaherty, Sean Manaea, Nathan Eovaldi, Walker Buehler, Nick Pivetta, Jose Quintana

There¡¯s been a lot of movement in the market for mid-tier starters, with Yusei Kikuchi (Angels), Luis Severino (A¡¯s), Frankie Montas (Mets), Matthew Boyd (Cubs), Michael Wacha (Royals) and Shane Bieber (Guardians) all striking deals, but a number of enticing hurlers remain.

Flaherty and Manaea are both free agents for the second straight offseason, each having dramatically improved his stock in 2024. Flaherty registered a 3.17 ERA with a 5.11 K/BB over 28 starts between the Tigers and Dodgers, while Manaea finished with a 3.47 ERA and a 2.92 K/BB over 32 starts for the Mets -- including a 3.09 ERA after tweaking his arm slot in late July.

Eovaldi has pitched to a sub-4.00 ERA in each of the past five years, and he also went 5-0 with a 2.92 ERA during the 2023 postseason, helping the Rangers win the World Series.

Buehler, another accomplished postseason performer (3.04 ERA over 94 2/3 IP), offers a lot of upside as a rebound candidate. Although he had a rough 2024 season (5.38) following his second Tommy John surgery, Buehler was one of the best pitchers in baseball from 2018-21 (2.82 ERA, 4.53 K/BB).

The results haven¡¯t always been there for Pivetta, but the stuff is intriguing. He owns a career 10.0 K/9 and had a personal-best 4.78 K/BB in 2024. Quintana¡¯s ceiling isn¡¯t as high as the other pitchers in this group, but he has notched a 3.36 ERA over 76 starts since the beginning of 2022.

The top corner outfielders (non-Soto division): Anthony Santander, Teoscar Hernández, Jurickson Profar, Joc Pederson

Although Soto stands well above the rest, the rest of the corner-outfield market is brimming with viable alternatives for the teams that didn't land the superstar slugger.

Among players who played at least 50% of their games in the outfield last season, only five had 30-plus homers with a slugging percentage of .500 or better. Soto did it. So did Aaron Judge. Two of the other three? Santander (44 HR, .503 SLG) and Hern¨¢ndez (33 HR, .501 SLG).

Profar, meanwhile, had a career year for the Padres after a decade of mostly modest production, notching personal bests in homers (24), RBIs (85), batting average (.280) and OPS (.839).

Pederson also had a big year in 2024, recording 23 homers with a .908 OPS for the D-backs, though it might be a stretch to call him a corner outfielder at this point. He didn¡¯t make a single defensive appearance last season.

The high-end relief options: Tanner Scott, Jeff Hoffman, Kirby Yates, David Robertson, Carlos Estévez, Kenley Jansen

Aroldis Chapman (Red Sox) and Clay Holmes (Mets) have latched on with new clubs in recent days, but the reliever market is still overflowing with accomplished late-inning arms. The Mets plan to try Holmes out as a starter, and clubs have reportedly considered doing the same with Hoffman, who posted a 2.17 ERA and a 12.1 K/9 over 66 1/3 innings out of the Phillies¡¯ bullpen in 2024.

Scott may be the top option here after a phenomenal two-year stretch split between the Marlins and the Padres. Since the beginning of 2023, the left-handed Scott has produced 188 strikeouts, a 2.04 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP across 150 frames.

Jansen, Yates and Robertson are among a group of relievers who are getting up there in years but can still get it done in the late innings. The 37-year-old Jansen is one of eight pitchers in MLB history with at least 400 saves. Yates, 37, recorded 33 saves and a 1.17 ERA in a bounceback season with the Rangers in 2024. He was teammates with Robertson, who is entering his age-40 season. The 16-year vet had a 12.4 K/9 and a 3.00 ERA in 72 innings with Texas.

Est¨¦vez had 57 saves and a 3.22 ERA over the previous two seasons while pitching for the Angels and Phillies.

The glove gurus: Ha-Seong Kim, Carlos Santana, Harrison Bader, Hyeseong Kim

Everyone in this group can make an impact at the plate, but their stellar work in the field enhances their value. Although Ha-Seong Kim missed the final six weeks of the season because of a right shoulder injury, he was a plus defender at shortstop when active for San Diego. He has accrued 23 OAA through four big league seasons while splitting his time between short, second base and third base.

Hyeseong Kim is slated to make the jump to the big leagues this winter after eight seasons with the Kiwoom Heroes of the KBO. A high-contact hitter, the 25-year-old Kim batted .326 and stole 30 bases this year. He has also won three Golden Gloves in the KBO ¨C two at second base and one at shortstop.

Santana¡¯s defense was a revelation during his age-38 season. After being a slightly-above-average defender over the previous handful of years, Santana recorded 14 OAA at first base this past season, the most at the position. That helped him capture the first Gold Glove of his 15-year career. Meanwhile, Santana hit 23 homers for the second straight season.

Bader is the least productive hitter in this small group -- he owns an 80 OPS+ since the start of 2022 -- but his 68 OAA since his 2018 rookie year places him second only to the now-retired Kevin Kiermaier among center fielders. That includes Bader¡¯s 10 OAA while manning center for the Mets last season.

The accomplished vets with something to prove: Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, Clayton Kershaw, Paul Goldschmidt

We may one day see all four of these players in Cooperstown, but each is coming off a challenging campaign, and none has Father Time on his side.

Injuries have been a recurring theme for Scherzer, Verlander and Kershaw in recent seasons, and it¡¯s going to be tough to count on any of them to stay healthy for a full season at this point in their careers. The trio combined to make 33 starts last season.

Durability isn¡¯t an issue for Goldschmidt, but the first baseman¡¯s performance has sharply declined in the two years since he won the NL MVP Award. In 2024, he finished with a .716 OPS over 154 games, swatting 22 homers along the way.

Still, given their track records, we can¡¯t rule out a rebound for any of these legends.
