BOSTON -- Due to persistent rain in the Boston area, Saturday¡¯s Red Sox-Cardinals game was postponed and will be played as part of a day-night doubleheader on Sunday.
Fans with tickets to Saturday¡¯s game can use them for Game 1, at 1:35 p.m. ET/12:35 p.m. CT. The nightcap will go on as scheduled on Sunday Night Baseball at 7:10 p.m. ET/6:10 p.m. CT.
The Red Sox downed the Cardinals in a 13-9 slugfest in Friday¡¯s home opener.
The clubs had a delay of two hours and eight minutes before the decision was made to postpone Saturday¡¯s contest.
Lefty Sean Newcomb, originally scheduled to pitch the Sunday night finale, will now pitch Game 1 for the Red Sox. Boston listed TBD for Game 2.
Righty Richard Fitts was in line to start on Saturday before the postponement.
For Newcomb, a Massachusetts native who grew up cheering for all the Boston sports teams, this will be his first start at Fenway in a home uniform.
Right-handed pitcher Andre Pallante gave the rain-soaked fans at Fenway a brief tease on Saturday night when he emerged from the dugout and headed out to the outfield to get in a throwing session. However, he was simply just getting in his work before making his second start of the season on Sunday.
Pallante is scheduled to pitch Sunday¡¯s first game. In his first start of the season, he beat the Twins by holding them to four hits and two earned runs over five innings of work. The reliever-turned-starter allowed three earned runs or less in 15 of his 20 starts in 2024.
Veteran right-hander Miles Mikolas will pitch the second game. Mikolas beat the Red Sox at Fenway on May 14, 2023, in a Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN, limiting them to four hits and one earned run over six innings as the Cardinals won 9-1.
