Veteran starter Carrasco, Yankees agree on Minor League deal (source)
Carlos Carrasco could soon be returning to New York. Only this time, the right-hander would be making his home starts in the Bronx.
The Yankees and Carrasco agreed to a Minor League deal on Monday, a source told MLB.com¡¯s Mark Feinsand. The deal, which was first reported by YES Network¡¯s Jack Curry, has not been confirmed by the club.
According to MLB Network insider Joel Sherman, Carrasco will earn a base salary of $1.5 million if he reaches the big leagues, with the potential to make up to $2.5 million in performance bonuses.
Carrasco, who will turn 38 on March 21, had a three-year stint in New York from 2021-23, when the right-hander pitched for the Mets. However, ¡°Cookie¡± has spent the majority of his career in Cleveland, where he returned for the ¡®24 campaign -- his 12th big league season with the team.
Last year, Carrasco went 3-10 with a 5.64 ERA in 103 2/3 innings over 21 starts for the Guardians. He still had a 31.3% chase rate that ranked in the 79th percentile in baseball, per Baseball Savant.
With a 4.14 ERA in 324 games (277 starts) over 15 MLB seasons, Carrasco has a lengthy track record. He was quite successful early in his time in Cleveland, with his best season coming in 2017, when he tied for the Major League lead with 18 wins and pitched to a 3.29 ERA in 200 innings over 32 starts to earn a fourth-place finish in American League Cy Young Award voting.
Carrasco isn¡¯t far removed from a quality season, either. In 2022, he had 15 wins and a 3.97 ERA in 152 innings over 29 starts for the Mets.
In 2019, Carrasco was named AL Comeback Player of the Year after he missed three months of that season upon being diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. He had an emotional return in September and went on to make 11 relief appearances for Cleveland over the final month of the regular season.
It may take an injury or two for Carrasco to have a chance to make the Yankees¡¯ Opening Day roster out of Spring Training. New York¡¯s rotation is led by co-aces Gerrit Cole and Max Fried, with Carlos Rod¨®n, Luis Gil, Clarke Schmidt and Marcus Stroman all currently in the mix.
But it can never hurt to add starter depth heading into camp, and Carrasco is an experienced arm who could be valuable to have in the fold when the Yanks report to Tampa.
