Rox reliever Johnson to pursue career in Japan
DENVER -- The Rockies have released righty relief pitcher DJ Johnson, who is expected to continue his career in Japan.
Johnson, 30, has appeared in 35 games over the past two seasons, with a 4.88 ERA and 33 strikeouts against 21 walks in 31 1/3 innings. In 2019, he appeared in 28 games (0-2, 5.04 ERA). In 2018, Johnson made seven appearances (1-0, 4.26). He made one appearance and struck out two against one hit in two-thirds of an inning in Game 1 of the 2018 National League Division Series against the Brewers.
At Western Oregon University, Johnson was mostly a first baseman, with an elbow injury and lack of control keeping him off the mound. But he signed with the Rays as an undrafted free agent in 2010 and saw time in the D-backs' and Twins' organizations. He also saw time in independent ball and was a regular participant in winter leagues before breaking into the Majors with the Rockies.
