Orioles agree to terms with C/DH S¨¢nchez on 1-year deal
DALLAS -- The Orioles crossed backup catcher off their list after signing veteran Gary Sánchez to a one-year deal on Tuesday. Terms were not announced, but a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand it's for $8.5 million.
The club also announced the signing of outfielder Tyler O'Neill, who agreed to a three-year contract. A source told Feinsand that O'Neill's deal is for $49.5 million.
With O¡¯Neill in the fold, it¡¯s possible the Orioles will not be bringing back veteran outfielder Anthony Santander. With S¨¢nchez coming to Baltimore, it¡¯s almost a certainty that catcher James McCann (the backup to Adley Rutschman the past two seasons) will not return.
S¨¢nchez, 32, is a 10-year MLB veteran who has played for the Yankees (2015-21), Twins ('22), Mets ('23), Padres ('23) and Brewers ('24). For the Yankees, he was a two-time All-Star ('17 and '19) and a '17 American League Silver Slugger Award winner.
Although S¨¢nchez¡¯s best seasons came early in his career during his time with the Yanks, he has still had plenty of pop in his bat in recent years. He slugged 19 home runs in 72 games with San Diego in 2023, then swatted 11 in 89 games for Milwaukee in '24.
While serving as the backup to Brewers catcher William Contreras last season, S¨¢nchez posted a .220/.307/.392 slash line with seven doubles, 37 RBIs and 30 runs scored. He logged 234 2/3 innings behind the plate in 2024, making 27 starts at catcher.
The Orioles didn¡¯t need to make a long-term commitment to a catcher this offseason. The 26-year-old Rutschman will continue to get the bulk of the work behind the plate and aim to build upon back-to-back All-Star nods.
Meanwhile, Samuel Basallo (Baltimore¡¯s No. 2 prospect and MLB Pipeline¡¯s No. 13 overall) could reach the big leagues as early as the second half of the 2025 season. The 20-year-old catcher/first baseman has a high ceiling as a potential future star, so he should pair nicely with Rutschman as a catching tandem for the future.
S¨¢nchez could be an offensive upgrade over McCann, who was extremely well-liked as a leader during his time in the O¡¯s clubhouse. McCann slashed .234/.279/.388 with eight home runs in 65 games last season.
Like O¡¯Neill, the right-handed-hitting S¨¢nchez should benefit from the updated modifications coming to Camden Yards ahead of the 2025 campaign. The Orioles are moving the left-field wall for the second time in three years, only this time, it¡¯s coming back in for a "happier medium" between the original dimensions and the overcorrected change of the past three seasons.
S¨¢nchez has hit 11 home runs in 132 career plate appearances at Camden Yards, seven of which came during his career-high 34-homer 2019 campaign. He still fared well there during the ¡°Walltimore¡± era, however, hitting .412 (7-for-17) with one homer over 21 plate appearances from '22-24.
Baltimore will have spent $58 million for its first two free-agent signings (O¡¯Neill, S¨¢nchez), showcasing its position as a more sizable spender in its first offseason under a new ownership group led by private equity billionaire David Rubenstein.
More notable moves could be on the way for the O¡¯s, who are still looking to add an ace and potentially bullpen depth. They also could continue to pursue right-handed hitters to balance their lineup, possibly even adding another one to the outfield mix.
