The Giants¡¯ injuries and roster moves page will be updated throughout the offseason.
LATEST NEWS
Jan. 15: C/OF Blake Sabol, RHP William Kempner traded for international bonus pool money
The Giants entered Wednesday tied with the Dodgers for the smallest international bonus pool ($5.1 million) in the Majors, but they acquired extra funds for the 2025 signing period by dealing Sabol to the Red Sox and Kempner to the Marlins.
Sabol, who was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Justin Verlander, was a Rule 5 Draft pick who recorded a .695 OPS with 13 home runs over 110 games as a rookie in 2023. Still, the 27-year-old spent most of last season at Triple-A Sacramento and wasn¡¯t viewed as a viable catching option for the Giants moving forward, causing him to lose his roster spot last week.
Kempner, 23, was selected by the Giants in the third round of the 2022 MLB Draft and logged a 3.73 ERA over 38 appearances (five starts) between Single-A San Jose, High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond in 2023. He missed the entire 2024 campaign due to injury.
Jan. 15: RHP Austin Warren claimed off waivers by the Mets
Warren, 28, missed most of last season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, but he returned to the Majors in August and recorded a 1.69 ERA over six relief appearances for the Giants. He was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for catcher Sam Huff last week.
Jan. 11: RHP Justin Verlander agrees to a one-year, $15 million contract; C/OF Blake Sabol designated for assignment
Verlander was hampered by shoulder and neck injuries last year, pitching to a 5.48 ERA over 17 starts for the Astros, but the Giants are taking a flier on his veteran clubhouse presence and playoff pedigree. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for the future Hall of Famer, the Giants cut Sabol, who logged a .695 OPS with 13 home runs over 110 games as a rookie in 2023 but spent most of last season at Triple-A Sacramento. Sabol got a look behind the plate in San Francisco, but the club recently claimed another backstop, Sam Huff, who is likely to be a better defensive option moving forward. More >>
Jan. 8: C Sam Huff claimed off waivers from the Rangers; RHP Austin Warren designated for assignment
Huff, who will turn 27 on Jan. 14, spent parts of four seasons in Texas, where he batted .258 with a .768 OPS and 10 home runs over 78 big league games. He should provide more catching depth behind Patrick Bailey and Tom Murphy this spring.
Dec. 12: SS Willy Adames signed to a seven-year, $182 million deal
Adames, who landed the largest contract in franchise history, will give the Giants a potent middle-of-the-order bat and much-needed stability at shortstop, where the club struggled to find an internal successor to franchise icon Brandon Crawford in 2024. Adames¡¯ arrival should allow the Giants to shift Tyler Fitzgerald to second base, helping to upgrade their infield defense as a whole. More >>
Nov. 22: OF Mike Yastrzemski, RHP Austin Warren agree to one-year contracts for the 2025 season; RHP Camilo Doval, RHP Tyler Rogers and 1B LaMonte Wade Jr. tendered contracts; LHP Ethan Small, RHP Kai-Wei Teng non-tendered
Yastrzemski¡¯s deal is worth $9.25 million, a source told MLB.com senior national reporter Mark Feinsand, slotting the veteran into one of the Giants¡¯ three starting outfield spots. Warren had a 1.69 ERA over 10 2/3 innings in six relief appearances this year. San Francisco cut two of its pre-arbitration players in Small and Teng, both of whom are now free agents. Read more >>
Nov. 19: RHPs Carson Seymour, Carson Ragsdale selected to 40-man roster; RHP Kai-Wei Teng designated for assignment
The Giants added Seymour and Ragsdale to their 40-man roster on Tuesday to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft next month. Seymour, who is ranked San Francisco¡¯s No. 23 prospect per MLB Pipeline, recorded a 4.82 ERA over 29 appearances (28 starts) at Triple-A Sacramento in 2024. Ragdale, 26, struggled with injuries earlier in his career, but he managed to stay healthy and perform this year, posting a 4.18 ERA over 27 appearances (26 starts) between Double-A Richmond and Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants cleared a 40-man spot by cutting Teng, who recorded a 9.82 ERA over four Major League appearances in 2024.
Nov. 2: LHP Robbie Ray declines opt-out clause; INF Wilmer Flores exercises 2025 player option
Ray will remain in the Giants¡¯ rotation after declining to opt out of the two years and $50 million remaining on the five-year, $115 million deal he signed with the Mariners following his 2021 American League Cy Young campaign. Flores also exercised his $3.5 million player option for 2025, giving him a chance to return for a sixth season in San Francisco. More >>
Nov. 1: LHP Blake Snell exercises opt-out clause
As expected, Snell opted out of his contract with the Giants to become a free agent. It is the second straight offseason he is hitting the open market after he signed a two-year, $62 million deal with San Francisco in March. More >>
Nov. 1: INF Donovan Walton outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento
Walton was removed from the Giants' 40-man roster after clearing waivers on Friday. The 30-year-old infielder appeared in nine games for San Francisco in 2024, going 3-for-22 (.136) with one home run.
Oct. 31: OF Michael Conforto, 1B/OF Mark Canha and C Curt Casali elect free agency
Conforto, 31, batted .237/.309/.450 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs this year, though he seems unlikely to return for a third season in San Francisco since the Giants already have several other outfielders, including Mike Yastrzemski, Heliot Ramos, Jung Hoo Lee, Grant McCray and Luis Matos, under team control for 2025.
Canha, 35, hit .288/.376/.329 over 32 games after coming over from the Tigers at the Trade Deadline. The 10-year veteran ended the season on the injured list with a right thumb sprain, but he didn't expect the injury to affect his offseason and said he plans to continue playing next year. Casali, 35, batted .194/.293/.250 with one homer over 41 games after reuniting with the Giants on a one-year deal in May. The Giants currently have Tom Murphy slated to serve as Patrick Bailey's backup next year, making Casali's future in San Francisco unclear.
INJURY UPDATES
C Tom Murphy (left knee sprain)
Expected return: 2025
Murphy suffered a season-ending knee injury after going down to try to block a wild pitch in the second inning of the Giants' 14-3 loss to the Phillies on May 4. An MRI exam revealed a Grade 1-2 sprain. He visited Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on July 25 after experiencing inflammation behind his knee and in his hamstring. Murphy received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his left knee on July 30.
Signed to a two-year, $8.25 million deal in December, Murphy hit .118 with one home run over 13 games with the Giants in 2024. (Last updated: Sept. 10)
INF Wilmer Flores (right knee tendinitis)
Expected return: 2025
Flores traveled to Los Angeles to undergo a season-ending Tenex procedure on his right knee with Dr. Steve Yoon on Aug. 6. He was placed on the injured list on July 25 (retroactive to July 24) after last appearing as a pinch-hitter on July 23 against the Dodgers. He had returned from the same injury on July 9. (Last updated: Aug. 17)
RHP Keaton Winn (right elbow surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Winn underwent season-ending right elbow surgery in Los Angeles on July 29. Dr. Steven Shin performed an ulnar nerve transposition, which takes pressure off the nerve by moving it from the back of the elbow to the front. The procedure is expected to have a two-month recovery process, which should allow him to be ready to go by Spring Training 2025.
Winn last pitched for the Giants on June 20, when he gave up five runs over 2 2/3 innings against the Cardinals at Rickwood Field. The 26-year-old rookie ended up logging a 7.16 ERA over 12 starts in an injury-marred campaign for San Francisco. (Last updated: Aug. 5)
CF Jung Hoo Lee (left shoulder dislocation)
Expected return: 2025
Lee suffered a season-ending torn labrum in his left shoulder crashing into the center-field fence on May 12 and had surgery on June 4. The club considered the procedure a success and said the typical timeline for recovery is six months. (Last updated: June 4)
