Free agent Ha-Seong Kim not expected to be ready for Opening Day (source)
It¡¯s not yet known where free-agent shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will be playing next season. But wherever he lands, he likely won¡¯t be ready to suit up on Opening Day.
Kim, who underwent right shoulder surgery late last season, is expected to miss the start of the 2025 season, sources told MLB Network insider Jon Paul Morosi. Morosi said Wednesday that Kim¡¯s first regular-season appearance ¡°might be somewhere in the month of May and not in April.¡±
The 29-year-old Kim hit .233 with 11 home runs and a .700 OPS for the Padres last season. He didn¡¯t play after Aug. 18 because of his injury and opted out of his contract in November.
His 2024 production was a step back from his 2023 season, during which he batted .260 with 17 homers and a .749 OPS. Kim also won a Gold Glove in ¡®23 and has racked up 23 outs above average between shortstop, second base and third base since making his MLB debut with San Diego in 2021.
