J.D. Davis agrees to Minors deal with Angels
ANAHEIM -- After signing veteran shortstop Tim Anderson to a Minor League deal earlier in the week, the Angels added another veteran infielder on Friday, agreeing to terms with J.D. Davis on a Minor League contract. The deal was first reported by Robert Murray of FanSided.
Davis, 31, is coming off a tough season with the A's and Yankees, slashing .218/.293/.338 with four homers and six RBIs in 46 games. But he's a career .257/.340/.425 hitter in parts of eight seasons with the Astros, Mets, Giants, A's and Yankees. His best year offensively came with the Mets in 2019, when he hit .307 with 22 homers and 57 RBIs in 140 games. He also hit 18 homers in 144 games for the Giants in '23.
Defensively, Davis has mostly played third base in recent seasons, but he can also handle first base and left field. He gives the Angels another corner-infield option to join Nolan Schanuel, Anthony Rendon, Luis Rengifo, Niko Kavadas and Ryan Noda.
Like Anderson, Davis will come to Spring Training competing for a spot as a backup infielder. Both moves are low-risk, because they are not on the 40-man roster and can be released at the end of Spring Training if they don¡¯t make the club.
Anderson, 31, has had two consecutive rough seasons offensively, combining to hit one homer in 188 games, but he was an All-Star in both 2021 and ¡¯22, while winning a Silver Slugger in ¡¯20. The Angels are looking for Anderson and Davis to bounce back, as they need infield depth with shortstop Zach Neto expected to miss the start of the season after undergoing right shoulder surgery in early November. They also previously acquired Scott Kingery in a trade with the Phillies and signed Kevin Newman to a one-year deal with an option.
