Baseball players are just like everyone else when they're not on the field, including having to deal with the annoyance of car trouble after work. Despite their fame and money, they still have to call for help and, if they're lucky, a coworker will stop to lend a hand.
That's exactly how things played out for Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran last season when his truck broke down one night outside Fenway Park. And it was all captured by a camera crew as part of the upcoming Netflix documentary "The Clubhouse," which premieres Tuesday and chronicles Boston's 2024 season from an unprecedented behind-the-scenes perspective.
(It also was named as one of The New York Times' best movies and shows coming to Netflix in April, with Noel Murray writing that, "Baseball is full of big personalities, and this series gets up close and personal with them.")
The latest teaser clip was unveiled on Friday and shows Duran working on the broken-down car himself while teammate Triston Casas calls for help and expresses display at Duran's hands-on approach.
"I don't want you sticking your hands in that, you know?" Casas tells Duran as he pokes around under the hood.
"It's all right. I do this all the time," Duran responds.
"Those are hundred-million-dollar hands there, brother. Come on, now. Stop playin' with that," Casas retorts.
As Duran gets help from someone on the phone to guide him through the fix, Casas continues to watch from the side, still apparently a little uneasy about his teammate messing with wires and parts.
"There are specialists for that," Casas says. "We play baseball. We don't fix cars."
Eventually, thankfully, the car starts -- with no injuries to anyone.
It goes to show the importance of having handy and helpful coworkers, even in the Major Leagues.
