Jean Carlos Mej¨ªa promoted to Majors
Looking to strengthen its pitching staff, Cleveland recalled right-hander Jean Carlos Mejía from Triple-A Columbus. Before the promotion, Mej¨ªa allowed two runs in nine innings and struck out 10 batters for the Clippers.
¡°I think it was part of my consistency. ¡ I worked hard and I felt [the Indians] recognized that I¡¯m consistent,¡± Mej¨ªa said through interpreter Agustin Rivero.
The journey to the big leagues was a long one for Mej¨ªa. He was in Cleveland's organization for seven years before the call up. Mej¨ªa was put on the 40-man roster three years ago. He didn¡¯t have any doubts that his day with the big club would come.
¡°[Going to the big leagues] was my focus all this time -- keep working hard, achieve that goal and be able to compete every day and prove [that I belong in the big leagues],¡± Mej¨ªa said.
Mej¨ªa received the word of his promotion during a day off on Monday and he immediately called his mother and wife to give the good news. He left Columbus at 9 a.m. the next day.
Mej¨ªa, 24, is not sure how he will fit in, but said his job is to get outs.
¡°I didn¡¯t have an assigned role in the bullpen yet, but I will get myself ready,¡± Mej¨ªa said.
