White Sox add righty reliever Brebbia on 1-year deal
The White Sox bolstered their bullpen on Friday, announcing a one-year deal with reliever John Brebbia.
The right-hander will receive $4 million in 2024, with a $6 million mutual option for 2025 that includes a $1.5-million buyout.
Brebbia, 33, turned in a 3.99 ERA across 40 appearances (38 1/3 innings) with the Giants last year. However, thanks to an xwOBA of .280 -- Brebbia¡¯s best since 2019 -- his expected ERA was only 3.33. He also registered a career-best 29.2% strikeout rate.
Before spending the past three seasons with San Francisco, Brebbia began his big league career with three seasons in St. Louis, where he compiled a 3.14 ERA and averaged 54 appearances per year. He led the National League with 76 appearances in 2022 and has made 21 starts as an opener over the past two years.
This is the latest move by the White Sox, who have shaken up the look of their pitching staff this winter. Those moves have been highlighted by signing starters Chris Flexen and 2023 KBO MVP Erick Fedde. The White Sox further added to their rotation by acquiring Michael Soroka and Jared Shuster in a trade with the Braves. Chicago also signed left-hander Tim Hill, who will join Brebbia in the ¡®pen.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the White Sox designated infielder/outfielder Romy Gonzalez for assignment.
