Abreu, Tatis named Players of the Month
Jos¨¦ Abreu and Fernando Tatis Jr. were named August¡¯s Players of the Month for the American and National League, respectively. It¡¯s Abreu¡¯s third Player of the Month honor -- he won in April and July 2014 as a rookie. For Tatis, it¡¯s his first Player of the Month Award.
Abreu hit .330 in 28 August games, with a 1.061 OPS. He knocked 11 homers, tied for most in the Majors in the calendar month. The only other AL players with 11 home runs in August were Luke Voit and Mike Trout. Abreu¡¯s .687 slugging percentage trailed only Voit among qualified AL players in August. In a three-game series at the Cubs from Aug. 21-23, Abreu went deep six times, setting a White Sox record for home runs in a series. He also homered in four straight at-bats in that span, tying the Major League record.
Abreu is the first White Sox player to earn AL Player of the Month honors Tim Anderson in April 2019.
Tatis hit .313 in 29 August games while posting a 1.057 OPS. He also went deep 11 times. The only other NL player with 11 home runs in the month was Juan Soto. Tatis' 11 included leadoff homers on back-to-back days on Aug. 7-8. He also hit his now-notable 3-0 grand slam on Aug. 17, part of the Padres¡¯ four straight games with a grand slam, a Major League record. Tatis racked up 2.0 WAR on FanGraphs, most among position players in August.
Tatis is the first Padres player to win the NL Player of the Month Award since Wil Myers in June 2016.
