Dodgers OF puts body on line with painful dive
MIAMI -- After the Dodgers' Kristopher Negrón went airborne trying to rob Lewis Brinson of extra bases in the right-center-field gap during the fifth inning on Thursday, he faceplanted hard into the ground and began bleeding from the nose.
Negron lost his cap and glove on the play, which resulted in a two-run double for Brinson, and the right fielder walked off on his own power alongside manager Dave Roberts and massage therapist Yosuke Nakajima. The Dodgers announced Negron sustained a forehead contusion and a nose contusion and abrasion on the play.
"I think I went down to brace myself with my arm, but then it didn't slide out from underneath me on the grass," Negron said following the 13-7 loss to the Marlins at Marlins Park. "It stuck, and the only thing that broke my fall was my face and my nose. Nothing's broken, thank God. I'll be good to go.
"Once [center fielder A.J.] Pollock threw the ball in, I just asked, 'Is my nose crooked?' And he said, 'No, you're just bleeding.' 'OK, cool, then we're OK.' I was hoping to stay back out there, [but] couldn't really stop the bleeding. Didn¡¯t know where it was coming from."
Kyle Garlick, who homered to break up a no-hitter with a leadoff shot in the fifth, moved from left to right field. Matt Beaty entered the game, taking over in left.
"[Negron] seemed a little dazed when I went out there, and he wanted to stay in there," Roberts said. "But we ran some concussion tests and X-rays, and everything was negative, so just kind of to get him out of the game and let him catch his breath a little bit was my thought. He'll be fine."
