Mariners re-acquire catcher Hunt in deal with Orioles
SEATTLE -- The Mariners swung another trade on Wednesday, acquiring catcher Blake Hunt from the Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.
In a corresponding move, infielder/outfielder Samad Taylor was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster, which remains full. The Mariners now have seven days to trade, release or outright Taylor to the Minors.
TRADE DETAILS
Mariners receive: C Blake Hunt
Orioles receive: Cash considerations
If Hunt¡¯s name sounds familiar, it is.
Hunt, 26, was in Seattle¡¯s organization last year before being dealt to Baltimore in a May 22 trade that brought back reliever Mike Baumann and Minor League catcher Michael P¨¦rez. Hunt was DFA¡¯d by the O¡¯s on Monday. He first joined the Mariners¡¯ organization in November 2023 in a trade with Tampa Bay for Minors catcher Tatem Levins.
Hunt was once a touted prospect as a second-round Draft pick by the Padres in 2017, but his stock has fallen, and he¡¯s certainly older among Minor Leaguers who have yet to make their MLB debut.
But the Mariners clearly liked what they saw during his stay with them last year, which included Spring Training and 24 games at Triple-A Tacoma, where he slashed .293/.372/.533 (.905 OPS) with four homers and 20 RBIs. His time at the Orioles¡¯ Triple-A affiliate wasn¡¯t as smooth, as he slashed .179/.219/.278 (.497 OPS) over 42 games.
The Mariners can always use catching depth. Their current roster consists of Cal Raleigh as the everyday player, with veteran Mitch Garver in the backup role. Prospect Harry Ford is in the pipeline, but he¡¯s yet to advance to Triple-A. Nick Raposo, a waiver claim earlier this offseason, was also in the mix, but the Mariners DFA¡¯d him on Tuesday when acquiring infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from the Cubs.
