Brewers finalizing Minor League deal with Canha (source)
The Brewers and outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha, who spent part of the 2023 season with Milwaukee, are finalizing a Minor League contract, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed the deal, which includes an invite to Major League camp.
A 10-year veteran, Canha hit .242/.344/.346 with seven homers and 42 RBIs last season with the Tigers and Giants, who acquired him from Detroit at the Trade Deadline.
How Canha could theoretically fit into the Brewers' plans for 2025 is unclear, but the deal does come on the heels of news that center fielder Blake Perkins, who was expected to be a key member of the Brewers' outfield configuration, fractured his right lower leg after fouling a ball off the area during live batting practice last week. Per manager Pat Murphy, the earliest Perkins could return is likely to be mid-April.
The 36-year-old Canha played in 50 games (.287, five homers, 33 RBIs, 119 OPS+) for Milwaukee in 2023 after the Brewers added him in a Deadline deal with the Mets to bolster their lineup in a push for the postseason. Post-Deadline, the Brewers went 35-20 (.636) and made up 10.5 games in the NL Central before being swept by the D-backs in the NL Wild Card Series.
Canha is a career .249/.349/.414 hitter with 120 homers and 459 RBIs. He spent the first seven seasons of his career with the A's.
