OF M. Williams leads latest group of callups
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles added another group to their roster ahead of Tuesday¡¯s doubleheader against the Rays at Tropicana Field, a six-man wave that included Game 1 starter Ty Blach and outfielder Mason Williams.
¡°I felt like I knew I could get back to the big leagues here,¡± said Williams, who signed with the Orioles in late March after he was released by the Reds. ¡°I just want to stay healthy and try to win games."
Williams spent 25 games with the Yankees from 2016-18 and 51 with the Reds in ¡¯19 and owns a career .289/.325/.396 slash line. He spent this season at Triple-A Norfolk and hit .308 with 18 homers, 67 RBIs, 15 doubles and three triples for the Tide over 121 games.
The O¡¯s claimed Blach off waivers from the Giants on Aug. 3 but sent him to Norfolk after the lefty struggled through three starts. Tuesday¡¯s Game 1 marked his first back with the team. He owns a 15-21 career record and 4.88 ERA across parts of four seasons with the Giants and O¡¯s.
Baltimore also called up right-handers David Hess, Evan Phillips and Chandler Shepherd and catcher Austin Wynns from Norfolk, and it designated infielder Jace Peterson for assignment.
When a player is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must be released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
