Yamamoto up, Hager DFA'd; Nimmo update
An hour before Saturday¡¯s game against the Marlins, the Mets made some roster moves, recalling right-hander Jordan Yamamoto from Triple-A Syracuse, putting left-hander Stephen Tarpley on the 40-man roster and designating infielder Jake Hager for assignment.
Both Yamamoto and Tarpley will work out of the bullpen. The Mets need help after using seven relievers in Friday¡¯s 6-5 victory over Miami. Yamamoto was on the taxi squad as recently as Friday. He appeared in one game for New York and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings.
Tarpley was on the COVID-19 injured list and appeared in one game for New York on April 24. It was against the Nationals and he didn¡¯t retire a batter after facing four hitters.
In order to put Tarpley on the 40-man roster, the Mets had to let Hager go and it appeared to upset manager Luis Rojas. Hager, after all, collected his first big league hit on Friday.
¡°It was really tough. I can imagine it was tough for him,¡± Rojas said about Hager. ¡°Watching him play like he did last night as a pinch-runner and later in the game getting that clutch hit up the middle, it¡¯s tough. ... I told him this is something that could happen and not put his head down. He [was able to] get himself to [the big leagues]. He was one of our best hitters in Syracuse. [I told him to] keep working hard, look forward and I pray that he is with us and we meet up down the road.¡±
Injury report
Outfielder Brandon Nimmo, on the injured list because of a bone bruise in his left index finger, said he is close to swinging a bat, but he is not going on a rehab assignment anytime soon.
Nimmo doesn¡¯t know when he will return to action. He wants to make sure that the nerves in the finger are 100 percent. He aggravated the nerve during a rehab assignment last week. It didn¡¯t help that he was jammed on a pitch.
¡°I feel a lot better than I was a week ago,¡± Nimmo said. ¡°I¡¯m very optimistic the way things are heading right now.¡±
Second baseman Jos¨¦ Peraza did not start in Saturday¡¯s game because of a right leg contusion, but he is available against the Marlins. Peraza hurt his leg in the top of the fourth inning on Friday after he was hit by a pitch from Marlins right-hander Zach Pop.
Worth noting
Catcher Deivy Grull¨®n has been claimed by the Rays and left-hander Daniel Zamora has been claimed by the Mariners.
