Rojas lands on 10-day IL with hamstring strain
NEW YORK -- Before Wednesday¡¯s game against the Mets, the Marlins placed shortstop Miguel Rojas on the 10-day injured list because of a right hamstring strain and selected the contract of infielder Deven Marrero from Triple-A New Orleans.
The injury to Rojas occurred in the top of the third inning of Tuesday¡¯s 5-0 loss to New York at Citi Field. After Marlins starter Hector Noesi singled off Zack Wheeler with one out, Rojas hit a grounder to Mets shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who threw out Noesi at second. It appeared Rojas was going to beat the throw to first, but he stumbled and fell to the ground and hurt his right leg.
Rojas was on the ground for several minutes before he was helped off the field by manager Don Mattingly and the Marlins' training staff.
¡°I felt something in my leg that I never felt before,¡± Rojas said. ¡°I was running down the first-base line and I felt a pop right behind my knee. For a second, I thought it was my knee and then the doctor said it looked like the hamstring.¡±
The injury to Rojas comes at an unfortunate time because he is having the best year of his career, hitting .289 with four home runs and 33 RBIs. He is also second on the team with a 2.7 WAR. Rojas is expected to receive more tests on his hamstring when the team returns to Miami on Wednesday night.
¡°Miggy has been one of the day in and day out guys. He brings a lot of energy,¡± Mattingly said. ¡°He is always ready to play. He is kind of the coach on the field. He is going to be missed. He is the kind of guy you can depend on to run things out there, make a play and he is always looking to win a game somehow. He is going to be missed.¡±
As for Marrero, he is having the best season in his professional baseball career, hitting .249 with a career high 14 home runs and 40 RBIs for New Orleans. Marrero has Major League experience. He once played three seasons with the Red Sox and one season with the D-backs.
¡°He can play all over the field. He is a guy with some experience,¡± Mattingly said. ¡°He is a baseball player, good base runner, good defensively in all the spots as far as knowing where too be, reading swings and stuff like that. He knows what to do with the baseball once he gets it.¡±
