The concept of the "Yes Day" can often strike fear in parents, an occasion in which they agree (usually within reason) to their children's requests. Can we watch cartoons at breakfast? Sure. How about ice cream for dinner? Why not.
Can Daddy hit a home run in a Major League game? Uh, well ... for Mike Yastrzemski, at least, that's a definite yes. Let's just call it a Yaz Day.
The Giants right fielder slugged a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning of the club's 5-4 walk-off win over the Mariners on Sunday at Oracle Park, and it turns out his 3-year-old daughter, Quinley, was the inspiration.
"Quinley asked me for a home run," Yastrzemski said. "Well, she asked me specifically for a triple, a home run and a splash hit. She was trying to cover all the bases."
Hey, one out of three ain't bad. It was the first round-tripper of the season for Yastrzemski, who belted 18 last season.
"But yeah, I told her I would hit a home run for her. I can't say no to her, so I had to do what I could.
"They're home [in Nashville], so hopefully she was watching. I think Paige [his wife] said she was. It's just nice to feel connected to them, even when we're kind of far away from each other."
The Giants are back home on Monday to open a three-game set against the Reds. Who knows? Maybe Yastrzemski can make good on that splash hit request. That's not too much to ask ... is it?
