CINCINNATI -- Wednesday is the final day of an 80-game suspension being served by Reds third-base prospect Noelvi Marte. The 22-year-old Marte returned from his rehab assignment on Wednesday, and all signs point to him being back with the team when it opens a four-game series vs. the Cardinals on Thursday.

For the past couple of weeks, Marte, MLB Pipeline's No. 27 overall prospect and No. 2 in the organization, has been on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville. One look at the numbers -- .151 with a .321 OPS, no homers and 15 strikeouts over 53 at-bats in 12 games -- might have fans wondering whether he's ready.

"The reports are all positive," Reds manager David Bell said recently. "Physically, he looks good. He¡¯s doing his part to get himself ready."

Ultimately, the Reds are looking beyond the numbers as they evaluate Marte's readiness. Their scouts and development people also give process grades that are based on multiple factors -- including his approach, strike-zone discipline, pitch recognition and quality of contact.

Marte was suspended by MLB on March 8 after he tested positive for Boldenone, a banned anabolic-androgenic steroid. His punishment also included ineligibility for the postseason.

Cincinnati could activate and option Marte to Louisville on Thursday, but that seems unlikely. Not only would that use up one of his options, it would also make him ineligible to be in the big leagues for at least 15 days -- barring an injury.

Also, the Reds' infield could use Marte's defensive skills at third base. Current third baseman -- and Cincinnati's hottest hitter -- Jeimer Candelario has been dealing with right knee tendinitis and isn't as strong defensively. Having Marte would enable Bell to move Candelario to either first base or, more likely, designated hitter to preserve his legs while keeping him in the lineup.

"We can¡¯t wait to have him, not only as a player but the human being he is. He always has a smile and a good atmosphere. A great kid who likes to work," Candelario said of Marte. "From the moment I saw him at Spring Training, I saw what a great guy he is. He¡¯ll get a chance to play on the hot corner, me and him, it will be special."

With Candelario as the DH, Spencer Steer could continue to get regular playing time at first base.

Candelario wasn't worried about changing spots to accommodate Marte.

"It¡¯s a blessing to have him on our team," Candelario said. "That¡¯s what we¡¯re looking for -- more depth and guys who can come and contribute and help us win ballgames. It¡¯s all about winning ballgames for me and for the guys here."
