O's bringing back popular all-orange uni combo: 'We'll look pretty sharp'
SARASOTA, Fla. -- The hype started to build on Jan. 8, when the Orioles announced their promotional schedule for the 2025 season.
Those with sharp eyes noticed something interesting about the Grayson Rodriguez bobblehead that will be given away to the first 20,000 fans at Camden Yards on May 31 prior to that day¡¯s game against the White Sox.
Rodriguez¡¯s bobble lookalike was wearing an all-orange uniform -- something the O¡¯s did sporadically during the 1971 and ¡®72 seasons, then used as a one-off throwback in 2010. But they haven¡¯t been brought back since.
Until now.
The Orioles announced on Monday that they¡¯ve added an all-orange uniform combination to their set for the upcoming season. The orange jerseys, which have been a regular alternate since 2012, can now be paired with orange pants. Players will wear the hats with the black front panel when they don this uni combo, which was inspired by Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson.
The look will debut on April 12, when the O¡¯s host the Blue Jays at 4:05 p.m. ET. The first 15,000 fans in attendance will receive an orange Cedric Mullins T-shirt.
"Personally, I like them. I think it¡¯s cool to continue that tradition that the team has had before of wearing those uniforms," All-Star closer F¨¦lix Bautista said via team interpreter Brandon Quinones. "I think it¡¯s going to be a fun thing for the team, a different thing to be able to have that look and bring it back and keep that tradition going."
The rest of Baltimore¡¯s uniform schemes remain unchanged from the 2024 season.
Perhaps the most iconic photo of Orioles players wearing all-orange uniforms came from the 1971 campaign. Baltimore had four pitchers who were 20-game winners that season -- Dave McNally (21), Mike Cuellar (20), Pat Dobson (20) and Jim Palmer (20) -- and they posed together for a shot commemorating an all-time-great O¡¯s pitching staff.
Following the 1972 season, the all-orange uniform was dropped from the Orioles¡¯ rotation.
The look returned on Aug. 13, 2010, when the O¡¯s were part of a ¡°Turn Back the Clock¡± game against the Rays at Tropicana Field. Baltimore won, 5-0, in a game that featured a home run by Luke Scott and a combined three-hit shutout from Jeremy Guthrie (six innings), Koji Uehara (two) and Michael Gonzalez (one).
"I love them. As an Oklahoma State fan, I'm pretty excited about it. I know they had the old jerseys a few years ago, and then, obviously, the history of them. It's fun. It's something different," said infielder Jackson Holliday, who was committed to play for the orange-clad Cowboys before being drafted by the O's. "I know they have that picture of Palmer that has kind of floated around everywhere. I'm excited to wear them. I think we'll look pretty sharp in them, and I think the fans will enjoy that."
Orange jerseys and T-shirts are available for purchase in-person at the Orioles Team Store and online at MLBShop.com/Orioles.
